Anastasia
THE day that Anastasia Smythe
met Aaron Phelps she fell in
love with him, and was thereafter
utterly miserable. Aaron was tall
and broad and athletic looking.
Forlornly Anastasia thought how
terribly handicapped a girl could
be simply because she was small
and delicate and disinclined toward
developing a rugged constitution.
At least at Haggis beach. The cot
tagers at Haggis lived an outdoor
life.
Anastasia hated it, but she tried
not to show her feelings. She
came down to Haggis every sum
mer with her folks and tried to do
all the things that other young peo
ple did, because, worse than hat
ing being rugged, she hated being
laughed at. And if she didn’t try
and appear to enjoy trying she’d
most certainly be laughed at.
She got away with it, too, man
aged by dint of clandestine mo
ments of solitude in which she
read or dreamed or arrayed her
self in something besides slacks
and sneakers, to be reasonably
happy.
But Aaron changed all that. The
morning after she attended the
Fielding’s party and saw him for
the first time, Anastasia made a
resolve. She wasn’t going to be a
hypocrite any longer. Heretofore
she had made herself miserable
merely to keep up a front. Now
she’d met a man who, by the
looks of him, was an athlete of
the first water, and fallen in love
with him. Because of her own
inadequately developed muscles,
he was beyond her reach. Well
—what was the use of trying any
longer?
That was why the next morning
the group of young people who
were engaged in an impromptu
fancy-diving competition, stared in
astonishment when Anastasia ap
peared on the scene wearing a
dress and carrying a book. A
dress! Os all things! Imagine!
Daphne Macßeady, poised on the
20-foot board, hooted her derision,
and the others took up the cry.
But Anastasia only smiled loftily,
continued on up the beach and sat
down, out of their hearing, in a
secluded cove, and opened her
book. But she couldn’t read. In
stead her vision became filled with
a picture of tall, broad-shouldered
Aaron Phelps, standing, Adonis-like,
on the diving float, gazing up at
Daphne Macßeady in awe and ad
miration.
Anastasia thought she had re
signed herself to the sacrifice of
the first man who had ever caused
the blood to quicken in her veins.

Frankly she admitted that h would I
be the beautiful Daphne who would
impress and ensnare her hero. Yet |
now that she had seen the thing '
happening—which was why she had |
strolled down to the beach —she i
felt hurt and forsaken and very |
much alone.
I
At this point her melancholy gaze
fell upon a canoe that hat. rounded
the point and, instead of continu
ing on, turned sharply and headed
toward the rock where she was sit
ting. Anastasia’s idle interest
quickened and her heart began to
pound as the craft drew nearer.
She sat like a statue until the ca
noe had beached, and its occupant 1
disembarked. She caught her
breath in a little gasp of astonish
ment when the tall youth stood
above her and looked down and :
grinned. /
“Mind if 1 sit down?” ne said,
and sat down. “I’m Aaron '
Phelps,” he went on pleasantly.
“You met me yesterday. I saw
you passing the beach a half
hcur ago and followed. Do you 1
mind? Well, anyway, I thought
you were a swimmer. I mean—
why aren’t you back there cutting
capers with the crowd? Well, don’t
answer if you don’t want to. I’d
just as soon talk. I like t> talk.
Folks tell me I talk too much
sometimes. But I don’t. I keep
quiet if other people look annoyed.
You see, you don’^ look annoyed.
Merely surprised. Is that one of
Poe’s books you’re reading? By
gosh, it is. Eureka! Say. that’s
pretty heavy stuff for a girl like
you. I’m glad to find some one
who reads Poe, though. He’s not
appreciated, really. Most peo
ple read a couple of his horror sto
ries and think they know his work.
Well, they don’t. His humor and
essays are really superb. Say, I
hope I’m not boring? The fact
is I loathe exercise. The only rea
son I went swimming this morn
ing was because I thought you’d be
there. I’m really quite lazy. Phys
ically, I mean. I’m a psycholo
gist. It’s tremendously interest
ing. Perhaps sometime you’d like
to have me tell you about it?"
Anastasia took a long breath. She
seemed to need it.
“I say, I didn’t mean to be rude.
I won’t talk to you about psycholo
gy unless you want me to.”
“But I do!” cried Anastasia. “I’d
rather hear about it than anything
else in the world. Right here and
now! Please talk.”
Which is why, after an hour or
so, the group on the diving float
began to wonder what had hap
pened to tall, handsome, athletic
looking Aaron Phelps.
