Ray Petty has accepted a posi
tion in Columbus, Ga., and last
week moved his little family to
their new home. On Sunday Mr
and Mrs. L. L Petty and Miss
Carolyn went oyer to Columbus
to see them.
The Alabama hurricanes that
were cutting Didos over west
Georgia Sunday came as near to
us as Macon and Gordon, roaring
like freight trains high overhead
but doing no harm, thanks be!
Just in time for Christmas,
Mrs. ( layton and Mrs. Sizemore
have opened a Gift Shop upstairs
in the Irwinton Supply Company
building.

“Christmas Everywhere.” a
pageant, will b*e presented in the
Irwinton School auditorium on
Thursday night, Dec. 16 at 7:30
Students from all grades will
show some of the Christmas cus
toms and sing carols from other
countries. The first grade will

Frozen Foods Award to Georgia 4-H'er

Sara Johnson, 17, of Culverton
is one of eight club members in the
Nation to be awarded a sectional trip
to the National 4-H Club Congress
in Chicago, provided by International
Harvester, for outstanding achieve-

prominent retired Dublin minis
ter, died here today in a local
hospital after an illness of three
weeks.
Mr. Townsend entered the
ministry in the Baptist Church
at the age of 16. During his min
istry he served over 40 churches
in the Middle Georgia area He
officiated at approximately 5 000
weddings and about the same
number of funerals.
Mr. Townsend had been pastor
of Marie Baptist Church near
Dublin for 22 years. In 1937 he
joined his sons here in starting
the Townsend Brothers Chapel.
He retired" about two years ago.
Survivors include his wife, the
former Miss Mamie Lou Dixon;
two sons, Forrest and James
Townsend of Dublin; one daugh
ter, Mrs. Glen bland Jr. of Sav
annah; three brothers, W. A.
Townsend of young Harris, Col-

Ore.; one sister. Mrs. Ben South
er of Young Harris; and one
grandchild.
Funeral services were held on
Wednesday at the Chapel, Dr. R.
D. Hodges officiating and burial
was in Northview Cemetery.
Everett and Mrs. R, T. Bridges
in charge.
Holland will be represented by
the second grade with Miss Clara
Beall and Mrs. George Usher in
charge. The third grade will re
present the United States with
Mrs. 1. E Everett in charge.
Mrs. Margaret Carpenter and
the fourth grade will represent

will represent France. Miss Mur
lie Butler, Mrs. J. B. Jackson in
charge.

gram.
Sara has an enviable record in pre
paring, packaging and freezing foods
for family use. In six years she has
frozen 2,348 pounds of meat 1,168
pounds of vegetables, 508 pounds of
fruit, and 860 cooked dishes.
1n1953 Sara won second place and
$25 in the state Frozen Foods con
test. This year she placed first and
won a SSO. bond. She has made 35
food exhibits and given 35 demon
strations. The family uses frozen
foods daily and keeps the freezer full.
She has learned that poultry is much
better if properly bled and that meat
should be aged before freezing.
In 4-H Club work for seven years,
Sara has completed 62 projects. Ac
tivities in club and community events
include holding office in F.H.A. and
Beta Club, class treasurer, singing,
piano playing, church groups and
television.

six will beselected for national awards
of S3OO college scholarships. A SSO
U.S. Savings Bond was awarded Sara

the membership of communitv
referendum committees who will
be responsible for conducting the
cotton marketing quota referen
dum throughout the, county on
December 14.
All persons who, as landlord,
tenant, or sharecropper, had an
interest in growing upland cot
ton in 1954 are eligible to vote in
the upland referendum If there
is any question about it. farmers
are asked to check with their A
SC office.

In the beginning this appeared
to be one of those newsless weeks
but by Wednesday the Bulletin’s
small cup was running over.

The Home Demonstration club
held its Christmas partv Tuesday
p. m. at the home of Mrs. J. H.
Holliman. Christmas songs and
games were enjoyed. Christmas
gifts were exchanged and, as
this was everyone’s party, each
member brought a bowl of fruit,
sandwiches, cookies or confec
tions and Mrs. Holliman furnish
ed the hot drinks.
