When the film was developed in New York there were so many bad places in it that the owners were at first in despair. However, they placed it in the hands of experts who worked at it for nearly two months. They cut out the worst places, cement ing the ends together, cleaned the spots as well as they could, and turned it out in its present shape. The result is that only one or two of the rounds are given in full. The sixth round was lost in toto owing to the fact that one of the spectators, said to be Stuart himself, got in front of the lens. Some 600 views of the back of his head were secured but these were hardly of value for exhibition purposes. But with all its defects the record is certainly one of the scientific marvels of the age and it fully dem onstrates what might be done under more favorable circumstances. It is said on good authority that the forthcoming second encounter between Fitz and Corbett, which has just been arranged, is pro moted solely by the Vitascope Company. The re cording machine has been considerably perfected since the first mill, and it is the intention of Stuart and his associates to see that nothing is spared to get a perfect set of pictures. One of their repre sentatives said the other day that they were pre pared to spend a hundred thousand dollars if neces sary to do the work. When the location of the amphitheatre is determined upon, a heavy stone structure will be built for the machinery so as to guard against all vibration. There will be a bat tery of three cameras, set side by s.Je, and all focused on the same spot. Two of them will be kept going and the third one held in reserve in case ■of a breakdown. It has been calculated that over $200,000 has been cleared thus far from the Carson City pic tures. Four sets were printed and they have been continually on exhibition in different parts of the country. It is thought that Europe and Australia will yield a harvest almost equally large and, unless superseded by new and better pictures, the film will prove a gold-mine for years. The fake prize-fight pictures which were shown at the Columbia some months ago are reported to have come to grief somewhere in lowa. They simply depicted two variety actors, made up as Corbett and Fitzsimmons, who went through the motions of the fight. There was no effort to show an arena, even in a painted background, and the fake was of the rankest kind. It seems that these pictures were recently shown in a town in interior lowa and, after they realized they were swindled, the people present swooped down on the machine and broke it to fragments. The film was entirely destroyed and the two operators who had the show in charge had to fly for their lives. This will be gratifying news for everybody here who gave up a. half-dollar to look at the spurious pictures. EVADING VACCINATION. It is Charged That Folks With a Pull Escape the Virus. DEAR LOOKING GLASS: Are you aware that quite a large number of people who reside on Peach tree street, Washington street, and other “swell” sections of the city, have not been compelled to submit to vaccination ? lam far from saying that a good lively epidemic of smallpox in our 400 would not be a great blessing to the community, if it could only be kept from spreading. But as the disease is no respecter of persons, 1 want to enter my protest as a citizen against any favoritism in the matter of vaccination. 1 have it on very good authority that the members of certain wealthy families were al lowed to do just as they pleased about it, and that one well-known grande dame slammed her door di rectly in the face of the city doctor who called. In stead of putting her under arrest, as I see they do women who work for a living, the doctor quietly walked off and said no more about it. lam sure that you can get a very warm story by looking into this matter.
