THE CHATTOOGA ADVERTISER TOGO, OK NOT TOGO — Soliloquy of a Confederate Center ft. [.AFTER SIIAKfPEARE ] Ex-Union and ex-Confi dcrate sol diers will appreciate the following doleful ditty, and litguhrions mono* loguo of a poor fellow anxious to be an “Exempt To go, or not to go, that is ike question: Whether it pays be t to suffer postering 3W idle girls and garrulous old women, Or to take up arms against a host of Yan kees 4»d by opposing get killed—To die, to sleep. (Git euet!) and in this sleep to*ay we sink To rest by all our country's wishes, blest. And live forever (that’ < a rnn.-imr.nation, Just what I’m after, ; To march to fight. To fight! Perchance to die.aye, thereVthe rub! For while I'm asleep who’d take eare of :l/a ry And the babies—when Hill is in the low ground. Who d,feed them, hey? There’s the rcs •pert f have for them t hat, make life sweet; For who would take the bag to mill, Plow Dobbin, rut the wheat, dig taters, Kill hogs, and do all sorts of druvery, If t am fool enough* get a Yankee J to! let on nij'brain! "Who’d cry for me? Would patriotism pay my debt, when dead? But oh! the dread of something after 7 death; That undiscovered fellow who’d court Mary, And do my hugging—that's agony, And makes me want to stay at home, Hpecially as I ain't mad with nobody. Shells and bullets make cowards of us all, -Vtel Warn'd my skin if snortin steeds, And pomp ami eiriumstaaeo of war, A e to be compared with a feather bed, And Mary by toy side. A woman at St. Louis, hearing that the house in which her lover lived was in flames, and that lie was in an upperroom unable to escape, bravely mounted a ladder to the window of his room, and rescued him. Enough for Me.—“ What do you do without a mother to tell all your tit)tildes to?” asked a child who had a mother of one who had nono. Ilcr mother was dead. “Mother told mo who to go to be fore she died,” answered the orphan. “I go to the Lord Jesus Christ, lie was my mother’s friend, and JIo is mine.” “Jesus Christ is up in the sky; he is away olf, and has a great many things to attend to in heaven. It is not likely He can stop to mind you.” “I do not know anything about that,” Sniil the orphan; “all I know is-'that He sa\ r 9 He will, and that’s enough for me.” The latest development of ingenui ty consists in training dogs to howl nocturimlly under neighboring win dows, and to fetch home the hoots and shoes thrown at them. It is said that thore are several canines of such sagacity that they will not leave until they get properly assorted pairs.— Exchange. A love-sick swain, in order to inoro fully understand the mind of his “la dy love” closed a letter with the fol lowing linos: If you was a dog. And I was a hog, A rootin’ away in the yard If the old man should say, “Drive tho hog away,” Would you worry or bite very hard ? Three fourths of the difficulties and miseries of men come from tho fact that most want wealth without earn ing it, fame without, deserving it, popularity without tempearanee, res pect without virtue, amt happiness without holiness. The sales of commercial fertilizers to the farmers of Georgia will aggre gate fully as much as those of 1870. Nineteen twentieths of these sales are on time, the planter mortgaging crops, and some stock and real estate in ad dition to secure their payment. Urn dcr their use the country is growing poorer each successive year. Again the farmers arc wild in their rage for cotton, cotton, and nothing but eotto". “'Tis true, ’tis ’tis pity And pity ’tis, Tis true.” It is related that when James Russell Lowell was last in Romo, a mendicant monk met the poet in the Covso one day, and asked for a com tribution to repair a monastery.— “You should r.:>t ask me for aid,” remarked Lowell, in choice Tuscan, “for lam a heretic.” “That makes no difference, ’ replied the astute friar, “your money is orthodox.” The poet appreciated tho witticism, and made -the contribution asked for. • Diphtheria. —Tho Tribune pub lishes a remedy for diphtheria, which is said by many to he a sure cure. A physician says that of 1,000 eases in winch it has been used not a single patiient has been lost. The treatment consists in thoroughly swabbing the back of the mouth and throat with a wash made thus: Tabble salt, two drachms; black pepper, golden seal, nitrate of potash, alum, one drachm each. Mix and pulverize, put into a teacup, which half till with boiling water, stir well, and then fill up with good vinegar. Use every half hour, one, two, and four hours, as recovery progresses.— The patient may swallow a little each time. Apply an ounce each of spirits I Turpentine, sweet oil and aquammonim, j mixed, to the whole of the throat, j and to the breast lone, every four . hours, keeping flannel to the part.
