Sketches of t>e Liberal Republican j
Candidates.
HO rack GItF.EI.RY.
For the past twenty rears no name !
has been more familiar to the Am.-ri- j
can people than that of Horace Gree
ley, who, as editor of the New York
Tribune, was as well known in the
South and West as in the North and
East. Mr. Greeley is of Irish de
scent —his grandfather having been a
native of Ireland —and was born on
the 3d of February, 1811, in Amherst,
Is. 11. llis parents were poor, but
respectable in their sphere. Alter
assisting his father in fanning for
three or four years. Mr. Greeley war
apprenticed to a printer in East Pul
ten y, in Vermont, and from that time
forth he commenced his career as a
compositor at the case, and subse
quently as editor. For ten years af
t r his arrival in New York (August,
1831) he worked as journeyman prin
ter and journalist. He was engaged
in a great many journa’istie enterpri
ses, some of which were successful
during their existence, while the tna
j rity failed. Among these wore the
Morning Post, the New Yorker, the
Jeffersonian, and the Log Ca'in. —
Hi 1836 h« w.- mun i. I to a Mi*
f. honey, of North Carolina. He was
: Whig while the Whig party surviv
ed. and when the Republican party
arose he attached himself to that
party, with which he has since acted.
The New Y’ork Tribune was started
by Mr. Greeley in April, 1841. In
1848 Mr. Greeley was elected to Con
fress for the short term. He visited
iurope in 1851, and was chosen
chairman of one of the juries at the
World’s Fair. In 1880, at the Re
publican Convention which nominated
Mr. Lincoln for President, Mr. Gree
ley defeated the nomination for the
position of ex-Secretary Seward, a
gainst whom and Tburlow Weed he
had an old grudge. Mr. Greeley’s
Course for the last ten years—during
and since the war—is familiar to all,
and does not need recapitulation.
B. GHATZ BROWN.
Benjamin Grntz Brown, the candi
date for the Vice Presidency on the
ticket with Mr. Greeley, was born in
Lexington, Kentucky, May 118th,
1826. He graduated at Yale Col
ledge in 1847, and afterwards studied
law and took up his residence in St.
Louis twenty-two years ago and com
menced the practice of his profession,
lie was in those early days a support
e ■ of Senator Benton and an advocate
o" the, emancipation of slaves in Mis
iouri. From 1852 to 1858 lie was a
member of tbo Legislature of that
State. In 1854 he established the
>St. Louis Democrat, which he edif&l.
When the war broke out lie volun
teered and raised a regiment, and
subsequently commanded a brigade of
Missouri militia in the Union service
during an invasion of the St at e. Mr.
Brown was foremost in organizing the
movement which resulted in the or
dinance of emancipation in 1864.
lie was elected to the United States
Senate from Missouri in 1863—his
term expiring in 1867. In 1870 he
was elected Governor of Missouri,
beating the regular Republican nomi
nee and overcoming all the former
Radical proscriptions that had pre
vailed in that State. He was elected
against the opposition of the entire
country press of his party and the
State and National Administrations,
his most- zealous support coming from
his paper, the St. Louis 'Democrat.
He led the anti .Grant Republicans of
Missouri, and achieved great popular
ity among the Republican opponents
of the Administration throughout the
M ost. In the month of October, of
1871, he issued a severe an ti- Ku- K 1 u
proclamation. His personal appear
ance, while serving in the Senate,
described:
He is about the medium height,
very slender in figure, with a pale
face and fiet-y red hair and beaid.
These words do not exaggerate, and
scarcely convey an adequte idea of the
brilliant hue of his abundant locks.
They are “real raving red,” nor could
hs most ardent admirer call them
anything else. If he were a lady,
this wealth of auburn curls could be
in the present fashion of that hue, a
great ornament; hut as it is it makes
him certainly striking, though assur
edly not handsome. His style of
dress is neat and quiet: his manner
es speaking calm at first, though ris
ing afterward to warmth and earnest
ness. One cannot be long in his
company without discovering much
firmness and resolution of character,
combined with an activity peculiar to
men of his complexion and lightly'- ■
built frame.
How doth the busy Horace (1
Improve each shining hour;
And look for Office every day
in every party's power-
How skilfully he builds his sells,
How neat ho spreads the soap.
And when pig-iron will not avail
Takes free trade as Ins hope.
A Confiding Husband!—During
the trial of a ease a witness persisted
in testifying to what his wife "told him. j
To this of course the attorney ob jected.
He would proceed again to tell “shust :
Low it vas,” when the attorney would
ting out: “How do yon know that?” j
.'My vise told me,” was the answer.
This was repeated several times.
Presently the Judge becoming una
ble to contain himself longer, inter
rupted: Suppose your wife were to
teli you that the heavens had fallen—
v.hat would you think?”

They invigorate the Stomach and stimulate the torpid
Liver and Bowels, which render them of unoqualed
efficacy in cleansing the Mood of all impurities, and im
parting new life and vigor to the whole system.

Dweasesof the Skin, of whatever name or nature ara
literally dug up and carried out of the system iu ft short
time by the use of these Bitters. One bottle in such
cases will convince the most incredulous of their cura
tive effects.
Cleanse the Vitiated Blood whenever you find its im
purities bursting through the skin in Pimples, Erup
tions or Sores; cleanse it when you find it obstructed
and sluggish in the veins; cleanse it when It is fouL
and your reelings will tell you when. Keep the blood
pure, and Hie health of the system will follow.
Pin, Tape and other Worms, lurking In tho
system of so many thousands, are effectually destroyed
and removed. Says a distinguished phy&dorist,
there is scarcely an individual upon the ia’ce of the
earth whose body is exempt from the presence of
worms. It is not upon the healthy elements of the
body that worms exist, but upon the diseased humor*
and slimy deposits that breed these living monsters of
disease. No system of Medicine, no vermifuges, no
anthelmintics, will free the system from worms like
these Bitters.
