changeovers, and don’t think they don’t cut tin prices and turn on i
the dteanr The same goes for the automobile dealers, and dozens I
of 'Other kinds of business down the line . . .
An interesting aspect of these clearance sales is that they are ‘
hardly ever held at the close of the season. Just as sales for most |
seasonal merchandise begin before tin eason begins, so the demand ;
for the merchandise deminishes ome .me before tre season ends.
That is why summer cleareme -ale -tai! in .Inly and run through |
August. Demand for merchandise al regular prices deminishes, but ■
is there for the same merchandise at red iced prices because there ,
are still many weeks of use for the seaso 1 J item.
SAVING: Many shoppers wondet how much they can actually i
save. Plenty, in most cases. I p to half in man;-. More than that in .
some.
The story can best be told by relating* the history of a typical
“sale" advertisement.
A businessman calls the newspaper office:
“When you get a chunce, come and ;ee me. I have got to move '
some merchandise. Got a big full order coming in Need the space. *
Also can use the cash.”
You make your appealame, with only a notebook.
Often the businessman warms to the tusk slowly, finding it hard
to adjust his thinking to the prices at which he will have to offer
the merchandise, remembering no doubt of the prices he has been
getting for months.
Sometimes hg doesn't know where to begin, so you offer sugges
tions, and the ad slowly begins to take shape, in very disorganized
form with items of wide diversity being called out. (Later in draw
ing of the ad, you will have to organize you notes putting related
items close to one another.)
“Well” the businessman says, “here is an item which we have
been selling for $7.95. Cost me $(i.5.“ . . let it go for $6.98."
You mark it down You feel tie price should be lower (thinking
like a possible purchaser) but you say nothing.
Gradually the merchant warms to his task, his voice becomes
louder, his dictation faster, his markdowns greater. You have to ask !
him to slow down.
Sometimes the sale price is decided in the following fashion:
“ . . . . cost im $4.17. Sold for $5.29. Good value at that. Mark it at I
$4.49 . . .”
At this point ym interupt.
“You can’t expect the ad to move goods if you don't get the prices
down . . . made your profit on those which you already sold.
How about giving folks a break."
advertiser pauses, but only for a moment.
"O. K.,” he says, “make it $3.98". Can’t go broke selling two dozen
a few cents below cost."
Eater the prices get even wilder. Sometimes the markdown is im
pressively below cost and you become a cus. nner and make a pur- |
chase on the spot. (I buy over half of what 1 need this way. before
a sale ad appears, while the choice is still best.)
A few days later a proof of the ad comes back. Often the prices
you were given are changed somewhat . . usually downward a little
more as the businessman contemplates the profits on the goods for
the new season, not the old one.
WHAT IT ALL MEANS: All this adds to that srtange phenomena
known as the side, which sometime causes women (and occasionally
men) to storm into a store and quickly reach a state of enthusiasm
not unlike that found at a riot, in their quest of a bargain.
For bargains there are, as the wise shopper knows. Ami the wise
shopper is not usually foaled.
So if you want to save a goodly sunt from one year to the next. 1
watch the sales. We hope you will watch for them in the Forest Park
News, because local businessmen, with lower overhead than centers
of trade, can often be found, on the scale of quality ami prive, to be
offering the best bargains you ever saw.
