RIVERDALE 4-H
BOYS IN MACON
POULTRY SHOW
Chickens owned by Paul and
Jerry Stweman, sons of Mr. and
Mrs. L. H. Stewman of Jones
boro, and Bennie Westberry, son
of Mr. and Mrs. Ben H. West
berry of Riverdale, were entered
in the state 4-H Club poultry
chain show at the Georgia fair
in Macon, Oct. 17-22.
County Agent Charles Tucker
said Paul and Jerry and Bennie
earned the right to enter their
birds in the state event by show
ing the two best flocks in the
Clayton County show September
23rd in Jonesboro.
In Macon these 4-H’ers com
peted against the two top win
ners from 100 other counties in
Georgia.
Tucker pointed out that the
Danish system of judging was
used at the slate event. All
contestants received a state rib
bon, with the blues paying $5
awards, the reds $4. and the
whites $3. Paul and Jerry’s
birds were placed in the blue
awards and Bennie’s were placed
in the red award group.
The county agent said the
event in Macon was the climax
to 1955 activity in the 4-H poul
try chain that has been in op
eration for 11 years. This year
ten Clayton County boys and
girls participated.
These 4-H’ers started their
project early in the year by at
tending a 4-H Club poultry
school conducted by Extension
Poultryman. Jim Thaxton, from
Athens, Tucker explained. The
youngsters grew out their pullets
and are feeding and managing
them according to Agricultural
Extension Service recommenda
tions.
