GMA Mayors' Motorcade to
Milledgeville, Gracewood
Set for December 13 & 14
The City of Forest Park
will participate this year in
the annual MAYORS’ MO
TORCADE to Central State
Hospital at Milledgeville and
to Gracewood State School
and Hospital in Augusta.
The visits to the two insti
tutions will take place on
December 13 and 14.
The Motorcade, which is
in its ninth year, is spon
sored by the Georgia Munic
ipal Association. According
to Milledgeville Mayor Wal
ter B. Williams, Chairman of
GMA’s Mental Health Com
mittee, last years event re
sulted in over 25,000 gifts
being distributed to patients
at the hospitals.
Mayor Williams said, “We
hope to make this years
Motorcade one of the most
successful.’’ He continued.
“It is our hope that we can
increase the number of
cities participating this year
and also increase the num
ber of gifts to be distribu
ted.” The Mayor added,
“Every city along with its
citizens takes great pride in
providing so much jov to the
patients at Milledgeville and
Gracewood. It gives a spe
cial warmth of Christmas to
all who supnort the project.”
Prior to the beginning of
GMA’s Motorcade ceremon
ies nine years ago it was dis
covered that manv of the
residents at the two institu
tions did not even receive a
Christmas card.

Soil Conservation Activities

Soil Conservationist
M. E. Waggoner completed
construction of a farm pond
for livestock water in a
40-acre pasture on his farm
located on Bouldercrest
Road, north of Ellen wood,
last week.
Mr. Waggoner has been
applying and maintaining
needed soil and water con
servation practices on this
farm in cooperation with the
Upper Ocmulgee River Dis
trict for 27 years. He re
quested the district to pre
pare a soil and water con
servation plan for 143-acre
farm for the purpose of ad
justing land use according
to its needs based on soil
capabilities. The next step
being to control erosion and
year by year use the land in
away that will improve crop
production in quality and
quantity.
During the middle forties
he decided to change from
cotton and corn, his basic
cash and supply crops, to
livestock which required
adapting land use to pasture

suited. These two crops of
perennials have paid good
dividends in grazing during
dry periods of summer.
Within 18 to 20 years these
crops have improved the
topsoil to a level whereby
these same areas are grow
ing fescue and clover profit
ably.

have changed from a deep
red color to dark brown. Be

enough grass and clover.

Mr. Waggoner was work
ing hard last week to get the
dam and borrow areas
planted to fescue and clover.
Needed lime and fertilizer
were applied together with
ground limestone applied in
the new pond basin at the
rate of two tons per acre.
Five additional areas were
planted to fescue and clover
to give ample grazing for his
Angus cattle.
