For Gotl and Country
By W. CHARLES GOE
Pastor,
Ash Street Baptist Church
It has been my privilege
for several months to chair
a committee of the Military
Chaplains’ As
s o elation
wherein we
are offering
the opportun
ity for high
school stu
dents of
Greater At
lanta to enter
an essay con
test with the
title "For God and Country.”
These rules have been
mailed to the high schools
of our area and we are hop
ing many young people will
participate in this program.
As we face a complex
world, we recognize that ath
letics has a marvelous place
and all of us enjoy the ath
letic events We can see that
the military service makes
many demands of the lives
of individuals; basically in
the realm of physical activ
ity and mental alertness
But it is our deep conviction
as military chaplains that
young people in our genera
tion should be encouraged to
use their minds in expres
sing themselves This essay
contest makes possible such
expression. We hope that all
of the young people of our
area will take advantage of
this and give themselves to
thinking through creatively
the opportunity that is
theirs to participate in such
an event.
1 am sure the deep expres
sions that come from our
young people today will be
a vital challenge to the
adults as well.
It was my privilege to
speak last week to the Opti
mist Club of Forest Park
We congratulate them on the
splendid work they are do
ing and the very name of the
club itself is a motivation
for others to realize their
place and responsibility in
the community I was inter
ested in looking up several
definitions of an optimist
An optimist is one who. even
when treed by a bear, stops to
admire the landscape; an
optimist is one who, when
he buys a box of strawber
ries. looks for the big ones

in the bottom. We chal
lenged the men with a three
fold program of life as we
interpreted from the experi
ence of Gideon who felt the
need of the Lord in a special
way First, he called for vol
unteers. This is the type of
men that we need in our
world today. Gideon elimi
nated from the army of the
Lord all those who did not
volunteer Second, he called
for valiant men, men willing
Io drink from water from
their hands in order to keep
alerted regarding the enemy.
It was not enough to bury
their heads in the rivers or
in the creeks in order to
drink. God eliminated a
great throng of soldiers then
also.

While You Wait
Then God calls for virtu
ous men. These were the
men that followed the com
mands of God; they were
armed with pitchers, torches
and trumpets. It would have
been easy to have laid down
these weapons and have tak
en up something else, but
this was the command of
God. As they went, they went
victoriously and the army of
the Midianites was de
feated.
What is it that God is say
ing to us in our world as we
go out using our brain pow
er to think creatively, and
then dedicating our hands
and talents unto the Lord?
He can give us victory also.

Think twice if you think our previous description
of starving multitudes has been exaggerated. To the
contrary, the starvation is worse than any vocabulary
can describe.
Too weak to weep, with understandable melan
choly in agonizing slow-moving daylight hours, home
less and deserted in lonely nights, these pitiful prayer
less people await the certainty of death as a relief.
Every day, they see loved ones faint. They see glazed
eyes, bloated stomachs. They see falling hair, shriv
eled skin and finally the fate of death; a fate they
know they too must face. It is not a pretty picture
But it is a factual picture. Mahatma Gandhi once
called it, "The Eternal Compulsory Fast."
These starving people gladly grab a bowl of rice
for a meal —when they can get it. They thankfully
accept a tiny piece of fish to please the palate as a
change in diet — when they can get it. Exaggerated?
No, not when 10.000 people starve to death EVERY day.
The countries in which excessive malnutrition
exist will be shown here next week You may bp sur
prised at the list Watch for it . .
