'Colour in the Gardens
All Year Round'
PINE MOUNTAIN, Ga.—
“Colour In The Gardens All
Year Round” presented as
an all day horticulture work
shop by Mrs. Frances Perry
of England, recently the first
lady in history to be ap
pointed to the council of the
Royal Horticulture Society,
was attended by around 500
garden enthusiasts on March
27, Wednesday, at 11 a.m. in
the Callaway Ballroom of
Holiday Inn of Callaway
Gardens.
The program was high
lighted with a special lecture
and slide presentation by
Mrs. Perry, explaining vari
ous means of color a person
may produce in his garden
year-round. With a back
ground of training at Swan
ley Horticultural College,
now Wye College in England,
and recipient of a M. B. E.
from the Queen in 1962 for
services to horticultural edu
cation, she has written 14
books, televised for 16 years
and is a Garden editor and
correspondent. Her horticul
tural experience projected
many new methods of gar
dening to those attending
this workshop including a
way to use newspaper to a
gardener's advantage.
Mrs. Perry explained that
“Colour In The Gardens All
Year Round” may be main
tained by flowers, foliage,
fruits, bark and tree trunks.
Showing a series of slides of
various flowers and trees
bringing color to a garden,
she accompanied each slide
with a short history on the
flower shown, type of soil it
is grown in best, how to grow
it and other information of
merit to a gardener.
The slides, taken in Eng
land and Germany, included
small garden spots of these
countries. Tulips, magnolias,
blue poppies, primroses, vio
lets, several types of roses,
daffodils, and azaleas were
among the more common
flowers explained by Mrs.
Perry.
In the latter part of the
day, those attending the prd
gram toured the Gardens
placing emphasis on the
Greenhouses for special dis
plays. Also, the guests were
given a preview of the new
Callaway Gardens Informa
tion Center which will be
open to the public March 29.

Premium
Increases
Bv a Dollar
The premium for the doc
tor bill insurance part of
medicare increases from $3
to $4 in April, Walter Hen
drix, Social Security District
Manager, today reminded
older people.
Persons 65 and over who
are enrolled for the supple
mentary medical insurance
and receiving monthly social
security benefits will find the
checks delivered to them
April 3 a dollar less than last
month’s payment, Hendrix
said. For an elderly couple
receiving a combined benefit
check, the reduction will be
$1 each, or a total of $2.
All social security benefit
check amounts were changed
last month, Hendrix noted,
as a 13 percent increase be
came effective. The amount
of the increase in benefits
Hendrix pointed out. was
considerly more than the $1
by which the medical insur
ance premium is increased.
The Government will con
tinue to match the increased
premium, so the doctor bill
insurance will continue to be
worth twice the amount of
