Countians Attend Dist.
GOP Convention
A large delegation of Clay
ton County residents jour
neyed to Macon on April
20th to attend the sixth dis
trict Republican convention
held in the Bibb County
courthouse. Sixteen counties
are represented in the dis
trict, and well over one hun
dred delegates were present.
Chairman G. Paul Jones
relinquished his seat to new
ly-elected Chairman Roger
Wilson. Mrs. Vera Martin is
vi c e-chairwoman, William
Ganswich of Clayton Coun
ty is vice-chairman, M. H.
Elder is treasurer, and W. E.
Crouse is secretary for the
next two years.
The Resolutions committee
presented the following res
olutions which were
adopted: 1. to award Ho
ward (Bo) Callaway a spe
cial commendation for ex
emplary work and accom
plishments for the party
since 1966. — 2. to commend
G. Paul Jones for his out
standing leadership in the
sixth district and the party
for the past two years. — 3.
to recognize throughout the
convention that the years
1966 through 1968 have seen
the birth of a real two-party
system in the state for the
first time in its history.— 4
to commend M. H. Elder for
his work and efforts for the
party in the sixth district.
State senate minority
leader Oliver Bateman, a re
cent bridegroom, presented
the platform for the sixth
district, which will also be
presented to the state con
vention. Some of the points
touched on were stronger
state and local controls over
local problems, an urgent
need to pursue a "win" pol
icy in Vietnam, stop aiding
Communist countries, stop
the giveaway programs
which have alienated respect
for our country all over the
world, the need to strength
en punishment for crimes
i both major crimes and un-
American activities), and
stop inflation which places
an immoral burden on the
poor, and tighten govern
ment spending. This plat
form was adopted by unani
mous vote after a brief dis
cussion about just how
much local control could be
exercised before the govern
ment should be allowed to
come in and provide funds.
The consensus of opinion on
that question was that state,
city, and county govern
ments should do everything
within their financial and
moral power for their citi
zens before the federal gov
ernment is called upon for
aid.
Two delegates and two al
ternates were elected to at
tend the national conven
tion in Miami Beach in Au
gust. These are Mrs. Tommy
Alexander and Ashton Cary,
delegates, and J. Frank
Stovall and Wilbur Owens,
alternates.
Questions
And
Answers
These Questions and An
swers come from Walter
Hendrix, District Manager
for Social Security in East
Point, Georgia. Mr. Hen
drix asks that readers
send their questions to him
at P. O. Box 1008, East
Point, Georgia. Please do
not mail them to this
paper.
Q. I am a 50-year-old
widow. My husband died last
year. I heard that I can re
ceive Social Security bene
fits on my husband’s record
because of a recent change
in the law. Is this true?
A. It could be true, if you
are disabled. A severely dis
abled widow between the
ages of 50 to 60 can receive
monthly benefits if her dis
ability began within seven
years of her husband's death.
Q. Is there any way to
qualify for disabled widow’s
benefits if I did not become
disabled until more than
seven years after my hus
band’s death?
A. Yes, there is. If you re
ceived monthly social se
curity benefits after your
husband’s death because you
had children in your care,
you may be eligible for dis
abled widow's benefits if you
became disabled within seven
years after these benefits
ended.
Q. I had no children. I be
came disabled 12 years after
my husband died. Why can’t
I receive benefits as a dis
abled widow?
A. To qualify for disabled
widow’s benefits you would
have had to become disabled
within seven years after
your husband’s death. Since
the work requirements for
receiving disability benefits
on your own work record is
only five years, this 7-year
period gives you enough time
to become qualified for regu
lar disabilty benefits.
The state convention will
be held in Atlanta In the
Civic Center May 3rd and
4th, and seven delegates
from Clayton County will at
tend. Guests are permitted
but must register with the
state office before those
dates.
At a meeting at County
Chairman Ivan Harrison’s
home last week, a resolu
tion was adopted that in the
event the party has no can
didates for certain positions
in the county, the party will
examine the qualifications
of the opposition candidates,
and if they find one desir
able, the party wil endorse
him for that position. How
ever, the party has hopes of
running candidates in sev
eral positions in the county,
but the only definite one at
present is Sheriff Bill Mur
ray, who will be up for re
election The sheriff is also
serving as sergeant-at-arms
at the state convention.
The district intends to
support Bo Callaway for
National Committeeman and
Mrs. John (Florence) Cau
ble for National Committee
woman. They are uncom
mitted to any candidate for
president at this time.
Perhaps the slogan for the
party this year should be
"LSD — Let’s Stop Demo
crats", for that’s what they
hope to do. There's still time
to come on over to the win
ning team, and the party
needs you, the thinking peo
ple of our country. GOP’s
great in '6B!

GARDEN DESIGN
The ultimate effort in gar

that serves a useful purpose
and has unity and harmony.
T. G. Williams, Jr., head of
the Extension Service land
scape department, points out
this is one of the underlying
principles of landscape de

The best way to become fi

learn how to say “no” to
yourself and keep your
