^^BY THE OLD TIMER^
From Dorothy S. Chepell.
Dinwiddie, Va.: I remember
when the orchard was natu
rally a part of the farm, re
gardless of whether the fruit
was not particularly worm or
bug free. You competed with
these natural enemies the best
you could because way back
then you did not have DDT or
parathion. Now. with all the
modern methods of battling the
worms and insects, how many
modery farms can boast an
orchard or grape arbor?
My folks had upwards of
thirty apple, peach, pear and
plum trees. But my favorite
haven was the grape arbor. I
haunted it whether the grapes
were there or not, but especially
around the time of my birth
day, August 8, when the first
blue grapes were ripening. It
was always cool under the
canopy of leaves and so many
dreams could be dreamed there
in the quiet and solitude which
is important to all growing
children.
Oh, yes, I remember my
childhood with much happi
ness, but the thing I remember
most is that wonderful orchard
and grape arbor. Thank you,
mom and pop.

Prepare for Bulb Planting
By Charles S. Tucker
County Agent
1 rees and shrubs are be
ginning to take on their fall
color. This is the signal for
some garden plants to come to
a close for this season and for
others to start. Gardening's in
terest and challenge originates
here since wise planning and
some preparation for coining
seasons must be begun during
the present time. Such is the
case with spring flowering
bulbs.
Preparation for the fall
planting ol bulbs consists of
some very important steps
before you purchase and actu
ally plant your bulbs. Number
one is the selection of a site on
which to grow bulbs. The best
site is one which is preferably
sunny and slightly sloped.
Specimen flowers on daffodils,
narcissus, tulips, crocus and
hyacinths usually result when
the planting site receives full
sun. These bulbs will grow and
flower in partially shaded areas
but never seem to reach per
fection. The soil condition
ranks very high in considera
tion ot a place to grow bulbs.
Excess rainfall should drain off
and water should percolate
through the soil. Bulbs like so
1 many plants cannot stand wet
teet. If conditions of excessive
moisture occur for very long
the bulbs will rot.
Most bulbs will grow satis
factorily in most soils. Making
sure of the drainage is the real
key for gardeners in clay soil
areas. Gardeners with a loamy
soil do not face this problem.
Regardless of the soil type or
condition it is always a good
idea to prepare the entire
planting bed rather than in in
dividual holes for the bulbs.
Always spade or plow down to
a depth ot 12 inches. Remove
or break any clods of earth,
remove any debris such as
stones and weeds. In other
words, clean up the soil. Then
work 3-4 inches of organic
matter or humus into the soil.
Also add 2/3 cup of a 6-12-12
fertilizer per 10 square feet of
planting area. Work these
materials uniformly through
out the bulb bed.
Beatnicks, Beware
Beards have long been
frowned on in world armies.
From about the third century
8.C., soldiers were ordered to
shave, not only for hygienic
reasons but because whiskers
gave a handhold to an enemy
in close fighting.
During 1967, more than a
million veterans applied for VA
medical care. 20,000 more
than in the previous year.

Freezing does not improve
the quality of foods. Foods
carefully selected and properly
prepared retain their quality,
depending upon length of time
stored and temperature during
storage.
Because freezing doesn’t im
prove the quality of fruits,
select fruit that is firm, evenly
ripe, and at peak ripeness for
eating. Immature fruit becomes
pale and tasteless in the freezer;
overripe fruit turns dark.

MORE ABOUT FORTAS
Though the Johnson ad
ministration is trying to smear
Senate opponents of the nomi
nation of Abe Fortas as Chief
Justice, the movement to block
the nomination is gaining
strength. Already, President
Johnson has failed in his initial
objective of forcing the nomi
nation through virtually with
out consideration.
Certainly, the Johnson ad
ministration made a serious
tactical error when Atty. Gen.
Ramsey Clark attacked the sin
cerity of Senators opposing the
Fortas nomination. He said
that the opposition consisted
of Senators who oppose “equal
rights." Immediately. Senators
from many parts of the coun
try replied to Mr. Clark’s crude
attempt to drag a red herring
across the issue. Sen. James B.
Pearson of Kansas called
Clark’s allegations "unfair and
unworthy .. . press relations
blackmail, and attack on the
integrity of the Senate.” It is
indeed unfortunate that Mr.
Clark would attempt this kind
of political hatchet work in
stead of busying himself with
contributing the most of his
ability to make G P. Babb the
best school in the state of
Georgia.
From the way things are
looking now, we are looking
forward to another great year
at Babb.

brought to the attention of the
Senate the role of Associate

obscenity cases. Sen Jack

opposition to the Fortas nomi

cisions on obscentiy which
Miller said are destructive of
moral standards. One of the
decisions Sen. Miller cited over

ruling that three strip-tease
films were hard-core pornog

Certainly, if Mr. Fortas is
soft on the pornography ques
tion, he is unlit to serve as
Chief Justice, in fact, even as
Associate Justice. One of the
worst evils in the country to

raphic material It reaches great
numbers of young people and

Q. You turned me down for
disability last year because I
had not worked long enough
Has there been any change
since that lime so that you can

A. No. A person who be

still have the live years work
out ot 10 years before he be

Q Why doesn t social
security pay a person for the
first six months after he be

A After the six month your

payments may start Benefits
may not be payable for any
month during the six-month
waiting period. Ilie social

Q. What medical evidence is

from your attending physician
and clinical reports from your
hospital are all that’s necessary
Sometimes, we may need more
information Then social
security arranges for a qualified

this telling comment on Justice
Fortas’ tract.
"Had Fortas published his

would have been proper
grounds for disqualifying him
for membership in the Su

cite Fortas’ doctrines in their

is perhaps more important, the
attitude of the court majority,
who have in a number of de

illegalities by the use of legal
quibbles, may now, through
the influence of Mr Fortas as
Chief Justice, harden into an
open doctrine of the rights of
civil disobedience, thus foster
ing greater disrespect for the

This pamphlet should be
