VOLUME 44 — NUMBER 38
POINT OF VIEW
By JACK TROY
President-Elect
Nixon Promising
We wrote some time ago about Richard Nixon, now the
Presidential winner—
Richard Nixon, the GOP nominee, apparently is levelling
with the American people in all sec-
ping boy.
"My feeling is this: I think that busing the child—a child
that is two or three grades behind another child and into
a strange community ... I think that you destroy that
child. The purpose of a school is to educate. That is what
we have got to do. We have got to educate them, and I
don’t believe in that manner of approach.
“And there is one other thing that I would like to say
with regard to the courts of this land . . .1 think it is
the job of the courts to interpret the law and not make
the law.
"I know there are a lot of smart judges, believe me—and
probably a lot smarter than I am—but I don’t think there
is any court in this country, any judge in this country, either
local or on the Supreme Court—any court, including the
Supreme Court of the United States—that is qualified to
be a local school district and to make the decision as your
local school board.”
On open housing: “Open housing .. .my position is the
same as Rep. Gerry Ford's . . . We talked about it at great
length when it was before Congress. I felt then—and I
feel now—that conditions are different in different parts
of the country . . . just like gun control . . . and ought to
be handled at the State level rather than the federal
level.”
Nixon told a press conference recently that if he is Pres
ident there will be a prompt return to law and order and
he spoke with extreme distaste about professional civil
rights groups responsible for the many riots.
I am a Democratic but I thought you might like to know
where GOP Presidential Candidate Nixon stands on impor
tant issues.

Question: Can you say that you

we're now learning that this is a
