well-known Head Scout and
Baseball Coach of Auburn Uni
versity. In characteristic
manner, he held the interest of
his audience of yog ladies,

Glascock, Jefferson. Laurens,
and Peach Counties brought
the young minister towards the
city, with churches at Marshall
ville, Oglethorpe, and Marietta,
preceding January of 1947,
when Reverend Hoyt Farr
became the “Undershepherd”
of Forest Grove Baptist
Church.
He brought with him his
helpmate, and the young “Min
ister’s Wife” was the former
Mary Katherine Usry, also
from McDuffie County a grad
uate of Thomson High, and
holder of study credits from
Mercer University as well.
Their “youngster” Hoyt,
Jr., is presently a Major, serving
with the 33rd Station Hospital,
Bremerhaven, Germany. Young
Mrs. Farr, was formerly Ly
nette Hankins, daughter of the
Ed Hankins of our city. Even
the names of grandchildren,
Jennifer, Natalie, and Gregory
bring a quick smile to admit
tedly prejudiced grandparents!
Rev. Farr is an active minis
ter, serving on Mercer Univer
sity’s President’s Council, Clay
ton County’s Juvenile Court
Council, the Advisory Commit
tee of Mercer’s School of Phar
macy, a Director of the Metro
politan Atlanta Red Cross
Chapter, and has taught in
Mercer’s Extension School for
a number of years. He is a
Kiwanian, a Shriner, and an
avid apiarist.

become “unpopular” with too
many people, he reminds us

problems that we gain strength
and grow. The avoidance of
problems through negative
thinking breeds fear and is
weakening.
In the spirit of ‘private en
terprise’ he told his audience of
cheer leaders, football coaches
and players to “work harder
than the others, to get ahead of
the masses.”
His formula: Make a visual
image of what you want to do
or want to be keep this image
in mind make it your ever
present objective in mind day
and night apply your total
effort to the realization of it
and you will be it.
Mr. Nix concluded with
brief Biblical references, to the
effect that one’s future success
depends greatly on his vision,
personal commitment and
dedicated effort

Is Well Attended
On January 20th, over 200
Junior and Senior High stu
dents and their choral and
band directors attended the
Young Peoples' Concert pre
sen te d by the A tian t a
Symphony Orchestra at
Symphony Hall in the new
Memorial Arts Center in At
lanta.
On January 22, approxi
mately 800 elementary chil
dren, p r incipals, classroom
teachers and elementary music
consultants attended a similar
concert for younger students.
Attendance by these one
thousand Clayton County stu
dents at these outstanding
musical performances was
made possible through the
joint efforts of the music per
sonnel of the county, princi
pals, teachers, the county
transportation department; and
in some cases, the school
P.T.A. organizations. It was a
rich cultural and highly edu-
