Aaron Most Underrated
Player of All Time
By JACK TROY
Baseball has done wrong by Henry Aaron, right fielder
of the Atlanta Braves.
Aaron made the All-Star team at right field and scored
a run, but he was shunned for the Greatest All-Time Team.
It was Aaron’s 18th All-Star game.
Willie Mays, who has played right field only two or
three times in his career, was chosen for the spot'
Aarcn, who soon will have hit home runs second only to
Babe Ruth, was called the most underrated player of all
time by NBC sports announcer Mickey Mantle, former great
Yankee outfielder.
"Most underrated player in all baseball.” Mickey re-
peated.

MICRO-MESSAGES FOR THE MOON (Tom 71 heads

I 1 2 inch diameter silicon wafer in a Time Capsule left
on the moon by the Apollo 11 astronauts.
The messages were reduced to 1/200th of their origi
nal size by a new information technology process de
veloped by the Sprague Electric Company Semicon

By etching the micro-messages in an ultra-thin, 4-

on the silicon water, a record able to withstand the
extreme conditions of space will remain permanently
on the moon to signify the historic event.
The Sprague process allows the pin-head sized mes

and other previous micro-reproduction techniques.

The Alcovy, Lake Jackson
To Be Mud Holes?
More than 80,000 fishermen
and property owners on the
Alcove and lake Jackson are
mad. Why'.’
Plans initiated, designed,
and financed by the U.S Soil
( onscrvation Service, an
agency of the I ederal Depart
ment of Agriculture, are being
pushed through Congress to
turn the beautiful Alcovy River
above Jackson into a muddy
drainage ditch.
The inevitable effect of
| channeling 80 miles of the
Alcovy River and two of its
tributaries with bulldozers and
draglines will be to virtually
destroy fishing in the river
itselt, while permitting the
destruction of 4,000 acres of
prime wetland wildlife habitat
which cannot be economically
drained without the four
million dollars of federal funds
earmarked tor channelization.
1 ven more disturbing are
the tears of fish biologists of
the State (lame and I'ish
Commission that siltation from
the project, especially during
the seven-year construction
period, will possibly adversely
affect fishing, swimming,
boating, and esthetic values of
Lake Jackson.
Their concern is heightened
by the fact that the two other
\ major tributaries of Jackson
| are already heavily polluted.
I'he South River is the sewer
j for half of the municipal and
industrial wastes from Atlanta
and DeKalb County, while the
'1 ellow River suffers heavily
from siltation caused by agri
culture and past strip mining.
Only the normally clear year
round waters of the Alcovy
help, rather than hinder, the
water quality of l ake Jackson.
The practically unpolluted
waters of the Alcovy materially
increase the feitility of Lake
। Jackson, boosting its pro
duction of fish and providing
the best bass fishing of the
spring and early summer in the
lake. Muddy water will lower
the amount of food for fish,
and make bass fishing more
difficult.
Biologists says that with
clear water. Lake Jackson is
more fertile than any other
hydroelectric power reservoir
in Georgia. More than 300,000
crappie were caught in the lake
in a three-month period alone
in 1966. Many of them
weighed a half a pound or
better, with two and even three
pound crappie not unusual,
l ishermen spend more than
half a million dollars annually
to fish in Jackson.
The total investment per
acre to drain the swamps prob
ably will cost more than
$l,lOO or $1,200 per acre on
land which according to the
SCS is worth an average of
S3OO per acre now, and which
will be worth only $350 per
acre for agriculture after
drainage.
What recourse docs the tax
payer have to prevent the
creation of such an eyesore
boondoggle? The only persons
who can halt the approval of
funds for the project until the
objections against it are re
moved are Georgia’s two U. S.
Senators, Richard Russell and
Herman Talmadge, and its ten
U. S. Congressmen.
Most of the Alcovy and
Cornish Creek-Flat Creek
Watersheds are in the 10th
District of Congressman
Robert Stephens of Athens,
although a small portion,
Gwinnett County, is in the 9th
District of Congressman Phil
Landrum of Jasper. Most of

If any of Georgia’s twelve

the Alcovy and Cornish Creek
Flat Creek Projects, the U. S
Soil Conservation Service will
be forced to redesign their
plans to protect the Alcovy
and Lake Jackson by elimi
nating channelization between
the upstream dams and Lake
Jackson.
The State Game and Fish
Commission has not objected
to the I 5 dams to be built in
the two projects, or to ques
tionable channels upstream
from them Only the channels
without a dam to settle silt out
before it reaches Lake Jackson
are a matter of major disagree
ment.
But unless there is grounds

the unwarranted channels and
drainage, the agricultural
