This being the last issue of the Quitman Independent, the advertisements of .Sher iff's sales, Ac., will henceforth be done ex clusively by The Qu'tman Reporter I have heretofore divided the official patron age between the two papers published in our town, and that there is only one, and the proprietors of that being both clever and responsible men, it is with pleasure that I adopt it as tile official organ of this county. This August 19th, 1875. ” J. T. Thrasher, Sheriff Brooks Cos., Ga. a Many thanks to our fellow-townsman, Dr, Win. A. Carswell, for an interesting communication, which appears in to-day's isnir, entitled 'The New Bur.” See edi torial page. Wo acknowledge the receipt of an invi tation of the pupils and patrons of Mr. W. A. Ramsey’s school, to attend their examination and address them on the sub ject of education, on the 24th inst. While we acknowledge the honor, we regret to state that previous engagements render it wholly impracticable. ■ Agricultural Convention. Our delegates have returned, but we have as yet been unable to learn wbat was done, except that the next meeting is to be held at Brunswick. Quitman was first mentioned for next meeting, and wns elec ted. Our delegates, Col. W. B. Bennett, and Capt. E. T. Davis, of Thomasville, advocated the claims of Quitman with marked ability, ami as orators distinguish ed themselves. But thero wns a motion to reconsider, that Brunswick might be put in nomination, as some of the up country delegates have a wanderful hank ering for salt water and its creatures, so our friend Bennett—upon the subject of fiddlers, shrimps and crabbs, utterly extin guished himself—voted for the reconsider ation, and finally for Brunswick ; so the next meeting will be at Htunswick. They will have a rich time eating crabbs in Feb rtmry. PS. Rust- Bali. The “Socials” of this city played their third match game of hose ball od yesterday afternoon with the "Amateurs,” of Madison, Flu,, assisted by Mr. C. Smith, of the Jeff erson B. B. C., on the grounds of the former. The game was com menced at about 3 o’clock, and lasted probably three hours, resulting in a vic tory for the “Socials” by a score of 18 to 10. This was decidedly the finest game ever played in this section, being unusually close and spirited, aDd the “Socials” may well feel proud of their achievement. Eight “white-washes” were made, five against the Madison boysand three against the “Socials.” Quite a large and enthusiastic crowd were out to witness the game. The Madison boys returned home last evening after expressing themselves well pleased with their visit. Mr. Beno Kayton umpired the game and gave perfect satisfaction to both sides. We would like to give a more extended account of the game, and regret that we have not time to do so. Finlayson and Mabbet did the best playing for the “So cials,” and Smith and Thomas for the “Amateurs. “ Everything passed off very pleasantly. Senator Norwood, of Georgia, in his re cent address at Emory College, made some interesting points. Among them wore ;these: “While emancipation diminished pur wealth, it increased our political pow jar. Negroes vote for men and not meas ures, and their 800,000 votes will be added to ours. The negro is gravitating toward f Ufb' The people of the north will soon tise and demand a surrender of the elec- colonization. ” BUSINESS NOTICES. W. C.
