Equinoctial Storm.
The. storm commenced early this morn
ing, rain fulling in tun-ents, wind eom
rmneing in the northeast. but shifting to
the South, from which it is now blowing
luout fearfully. Many of the shade trees
of the city have fallen. Mr. Crane's car
penter shop, a huge wooilt-u building, has
just fallen. It is now 12 o’clock Friday;
Scarcely any rain falling, but the wind is
constantly increasing in fury. Another
frame house, belonging to Mr. Frank
Spain, lias just fallen. These are within
sight of our office. We can’t tell what
other damages the town has sustained.
W a.ro not very timid, but we confess our
equilibrium is somewhat disturbed. The
paper is ready to go to press.
Home very fine Chignon* at 8. Shanda Ta.

We are happy to announce that CoL P.
Sheffield, who has been seriously ill for
some two weeks, is now convalescent, and
we hope to see him soon on the street as
cheerful as in former days.

Back Again.
The same H. H. Kayton that orgauized
the first Democratic dub ever organized
in Quitman, and fought with us in the
last political campaign, lias returned, and
is now opening a large stock of general
merchandise at his same old stand. Kay
ton will be remembered by his old
friends, and they will certainly call to wel
come his return.

“Ye Sainted Buzzard."
We have a newly married couple in our
town who had a love ripple the second
night of their honey-moon. The delighted
bride-groom, mingling with his many con
gratulating friends, strayed from the bridal
chamber and partook so freely of benzine
as to destroy his equilibrium, and having
lost his centre of gravity, necessarily re
mained absent until a late hour of the
night, or rather an early hour of the morn
ing. When he recovered his lost estate
he steered successfully through the sea of
sand to the chamber of his neglected and
justly indignant bride, still sleepless, and
lamp burning, by the light of which her
eyes shone with orient brightness, and
.whoso cheek blushed with the brilliant
hue of the charcoal. After a rebuke com
mensurate with the offence had been ad
ministered, and the last epithet, (spoken,
of course, in love’s tenderness), was ex
pended upon the reticent and seemingly
penitent husband, he meekly and affec
tionately replied: “Hie, close up ye sainted
buzzard.’’ And she did, after which they
both slept, and the reporter retired.
Conte Into Me nil jw Ikttl Promlwd, fur
the Time 1. nt Maud.
It will be remembered that our pnb-
I lislied terms of subscription was cash in
advance; but owing to the stringency of
the times and the scarcity of money iu the
country, aud the great demand for Tun
Independent, we were induced to suspend
our cash rule during the summer months;
but in every iustuu-o with the sia oiul un
standing that (Miymeuts were to be made as
soon as cotton was sold.
We have almost melted with the heat of
summer. We have wrestled with the
winds and struggled with the waves to
give our patrons an interesting and amus
ing paper. How far in tlmt our efforts
have succeeded, we can only judge by the
constantly increasing patronuge. Though
struggling for you, we have kept our
word. We have worked, and we have
waited. Reward our labors in the verifi
cation of your promises. Two dollars to
you is but a small amount, but three or
four hundred such sums aggregated make
a considerable amount. If we had failed
when you could not help us, we would
never have complained; but if you let us
fail when you have promised, and can
strengthen us, we will not feel very reli
giously iucliued towards you. We formed
in early life a habit of eating and (thougli
we are not us old as we expect to be) we
have practiced it too long to abandon it,
and the ways of men which are past find
ing out, require it to be paid for. And
ever since our maker cut and made gar
ments for Adam and Eve in the garden
before their expulsion, it has been a cus
tom to wear clothes, and our wardrobe is
getting scant, nnd our merchants, much us
we have talked for them, are not able to
give them to us, and can’t sell out to any
one tlmt cun. Our employees formed the
same habits, and practice them now; and
they have families who engage in these
same indulgences and can’t be prevailed
upon to abandon them. These are a part
of our expenses and they must be met.
>So come up, subscribers, like true men, to
the help of The Independent agidust the
Radicals, and we will double our energies,
strengthen onr sails, cut the wind and ride
the waves into a glorious haven of inde
pendence. Now, dear patron, don’t think
everybody but you will pay and that your
two dollars will not be needed. All may
think that, and the young and now vigo
rous Independent may die from sheer neg
lect.
If any who receive the Independent
feel that it is not worth the subscription
price, and is an unwelcome visitor at his
house, and will so inform us by letter, we
will insert it in our columns, with the as
surance that he is no lunger our debtor.

Cotton Receipts.
The receipts at the depot in this place
for the past week are ns follows:
Friday, 00 bales; .Saturday, 101; Mon
day, 28; Tuesday, 4'*> Wednesday, 70;
Thursday, 40. Making a total of 305 bales ;
up to Thursday night, the 18th inst.
The receipts from the 27th of August
to September 18 are 017 bales, exclusive
of factory purchases.
The price has varied for the last week \
from 111 to 16 cents, according to grade,
cash sales. Purchases made on thirty
days, wc arc informed, range higher—one
eeut per pound over the cash bids. We
have no enjiaiyscc ic 90t*vr s t?,;p>etions,
but with such an extravagant per cent,
we think such purchases must he very
precarious, or else the cash purchasers
must have a good thing, as the difference
is between 70 and 80 per cent, per annum
for money, a frightful interest, we think.
We hope that the purchasers may save
themselves from loss, but above all other
considerations, ■no liojie the plautcr may
be rewarded for his labor.

very rapidly—ten sold within the last
two days. Call at once and procure a
horse sound in health nnd reliable in dis
position. Deal with men that are always
with you, and responsible for all their con
tracts. Don’t wait for drivers, who may
defraud you and disappear, and from
whom you can recover no damages.

A Splendid Plantation for Sale and m
Great Karenin Offered.
A plantation near Quitman, containing
twelve hundred acres—three hundred
acres in cultivation —of excellent soil, with
good, clay bottom. Fencing all good;
buildings plain but comfortable, with fine
water; plenty of water running through
the fields. The entire grain crop, with
all the stock of every kind, farming uten
sels, etc., will be sold with the. plantation
if purchaser desires. Terms favorable.
For further particulars apply at this
office. Ail correspondence addressed to
this office, with a view to purchase, will
be promptly attended to.
The particular man makes more trouble
and causes more annoyance and delay than
a half dosenfcare leg* people. When he is
traveling he puts his ticket in a place so
remarkably secure that not only dishonest
people cabnot find it but he can’t find it
himself. This tends to make him confused
in his search and unreliable in his state
mens to the conductor, and after working
np that worthy to a degree of misery that
borders pretty closely on profanity, he
either pays his fare over or is put off the
train. After he gets home he puts a piece
in the local paper which speaks of the road
as a “grinding monopoly.’’
There is loud and growing outcry against
horse cars in London, which the commis
sioner of police declares are ‘ ‘daily becom
ing a greater nuisance to the general pub
lic,” and it quite probably that street
railroads will soon cease to exist, at least
in the heart of the city.
A Chicago backman went on a week’s

The English ladies, us well as English
men, sometimes liit from the shoulder. A
Miss Rodman lives near Bristol, and owns
| a small piece of ground. Here also resides
! Mr. Frederick Smith, who claims a right of
’ way over Miss Rudmon's ground. The
j lady resisted. He attempted to force his
way, and put his hand through the bar of
the gate to open it. To use his own words
; iu court when the ease was tried:
Miss Rndman hit straight out from the
shoulder with her clenched fist, and struck
me in the face. She repeated this three
J times. She also raised her foot, and kicked
me more than once in the arm—that was
i through the gate—bruising me very muclj
and muking me sore for a week. Siio then
; seized my walking stick, wrenched it from
: me, and struck me several times on my
! back and shoulders. I never touched her,
[ but told her if I was doing wrong she had
her remedy.
George Alford, farmer, shared no better
fate, for he, while assisting Mr. Smith, re
ceived “one straight from the shoulder of
Miss Rndman, on the month.” "Do you
know who you be hitting?’ said the farmer.
“Yes," said the lady. “’Twns me,” said
the farmer. “I know it,” said Miss Rtul
mau; “you have no business here; I'Ugive
.You another if you don’t go. Mary, go and
fetch my big knobbed stick; I’ll show them
whether they have a right here.” They did
not wait for the knobbed stick, but retreat
ed from the position, and left the Indies
victor's iu the field.
