How Some Citizens of Windsor Hill Were
Frightened.
The famous Tucker’s ghost was a delu

enjoying what may be termed a genuine
ghost sensation.
When it was first seen it was not at that
hour when graveyards yawn and graves
are supposed to give up their dead, but In
the fitful glare of last Sunday afternoon,
between 3 and 4 o'clock, when a female
spectre, throwing off the cerements of the
dead, wandered forth to re-visit the scenes

Captain Frank Wilder is one of the popu

ginia and Georgia railroad. About two
or three week ago be laid aside tbe punch
to have a vacation. His sister was at
Staunton, and as she was going to gradu

go and see her. It may be remarked right
here, that there was another attraction at
Staunton. On a previous occasion he
bad made the acquaintance of a young
lady from Mississippi, and in, the corres
pondence that followed, a flame of love
was fanned Into existence.
While in Staunton, the Captain made
some friends among tho young men of
the city. He also bow bis sweetheart quite
often, and during his stay the subject of
matrimony was broached perhaps more
than once.

loved, be proposed a wedding. The idea

Amemcts, June 19.—Tbe walking match
given here under the auspices ol the Me
chanics and Wide Awake Fire Companies,
came off on Wednesday evening last. The
Georgia warehouse was well arranged for
the purpose of the entertainment, and the
mastc furnished by the Fort Valley band.
Tbe track was seventeen laps to the mile,
and the prizes were: First |30, second
(25, third (15, fourth (10, besides numer
ous others offered by outside parties, con
sisting of cigars, shoes, bats, baby cradles,
etc. This sort of a tiling being new to our
people, a large audience was In attend
ance. There were ten men to start, viz.:
M. Cobb, Ed. Stallings, J. T. Stallings,
Ed. Smith, A. A. Rylander, D. E. Lewis, G.
"\ Holder, Robert Wheeler, E. L. Gucrry,
. K. Allen.
Promptly at 3 o’clock, at the word "go,”
from the judge's stand, the walkers sprang
boldly forward to their work. Messrs.
Cobb and Rvlsnder were the favorites at
the start. For tbe first two hours, with
the exception of Alien, who took tbe lead,
ail were about even. At tbts time Wheeler
and Ed. Stallings gave up the race. Allen;
after a walk of 23 miles >nd 11laps in
3:55 hours, was compelled to leave the
track from being taken with cramp. He
made the greatest number of miles in the
first hour. The excitement at the closing
of the race was intense. The score stood
as follows:
Ed. Smith, 34 miles 0laps; A. A. Rylan-
der, 32 miles 15!i laps; J. T. 8ta!lings, 32
miles i'A laps; D. E. Lewis, 31 miles 12U
laps: O.T. Holder. 31 miles 10'i laps; J.
M. Cobb, 31 miles 4)4 laps; E. L. Guerry,
Ml miles iX laps.
As you had a rooster at the head of the
column crowing orer your victory over
Atlanta, we think you should place two
over ours. Pecuniarily the match was a
great success for the fire companies. The
contestants were all on the streeta the
morning after the race, apparently bright
