TIIE WEEKLY TELEGRAPH AND MESSENGER, FRIDAY JULY 25 18S4.
MULHOLLAND IN TROUBLE.
A Young Man Reeling Behind the Prleon
Bara.
About seven or eight months ago there
came to Macon with hia young wife, from
Springfield, 0., a young man who auto
graphed his name upon the register of
Brown's Hotel as George G. Mulhoiland.
By means of an acquaintance with a prom
inent gentleman of Kentucky, who was
here on a visit, Mulhoiland
was introduced into the Macon club
rooms, but was afterward debarred from
the privileges of that institution, presum
ably by resign of having taken up perma
nent resident: in Macon.
Mnlholland is of slender build and of
extremely youthful appearance. His
tailor was faultless, mid bis immacnlate
ahirt front was always crowned with a cra
vat ot snowy whiteness. He
was so faultless in his attire.*so dignified
in his step, and sodainty in his tastes, that
a man always forgot himself as the young
gentleman passed and fell into the wo
man's habit of turning around and look
ing after him. By being so well eyed, it
was found that while be carried with him
the apparent air of a well bred gentle
man in good circumstances, he
■was nearly always seen in
company with the sporting fraterniw.
This fact aroused (he suspicion that the
shapely lingers of the solt white hand
deftly turned the aces and trumps. This
was mere suspicion, however, as no one
cou!%lie found to say that Mulhoiland had
aught to do with the tiger.
Many stories were put in circulation
about him, owing to the air of mystery
that envelled his invisible bank account,
and among them was that he was an
engraver, and another was that he had
married a wealthy lady against her moth
er's wishes. That the shapely fingers
could form chalk letters upon the black
board of Cromeline's pool business in a
manner lo evoke admiration, was consid
erable evidence that, if not an engraver,
be wu a draughtsman of no ordinary
merit.
That the latter story was true, few
doubted, as be was lavish with money
during the first four or five months of Ins
stay in Macon. Ho paid Brown's Hotel
over six hundred dollars for Iwiartl alone.
Tiring of hotel life, and his wife de
manding a more quiet method of living.
Mulhoiland rented one of those pretty cot
tages belonging to Dannenhergand Doody.
comer Walnut nud Fourth streets, paying
therefor $30 per month. Not quite two
months ago be began having his meals
gent to his house from the dining rooms of
the East Tennessee, Virginia and Georgia
railroad, of whicli Captain Frank Hervey
is manager. At the expiration of the first
month. Captain Hervey went to
him for the money. He told the
Captain that he was short, but was
expecting some money, and when
It arrived he would settle the bill. The
meals were sent on as usual and Captain
Hervey continued to ask for Ids pay with
no favorable indication of reward.
A few days ago Captain Hervey received
an intimation that Mulhoiland was pre
paring to leave Macon. Yesterday the
Captain had an attachment is
sued from Justice Freeman's office,
and the attachment was aerved on some
household effects and a trunk. The levy
satisfied, farther signs looked to Capt.
Hervey that his boarder was about to
leave soot er than waa at first suspected,
and his arrest was ordered.
Officers Ooodroe and Doc Fennell pro
ceeded to Mulholiond's residence about
8 o'clock last night, and proceeded to ar
rest him. He demanded a warrant, but
finally quietly submitted, his wife fainting
through excitement. He was taken to the
barracks, where he thus related his aide cf
the story:
“I came here about seven or eight
months ago from Sprtngeld, O..
with my wife. I bad just
married, and I wanted to
take np my residence in Macon, and go
into tbasporting goods business. I board-
ed at Brown's Hotel for four months, pay
ing my board promptly. I left there and
rented a house from Mr. Dannenberg and
paid thirty dollars ped month promptly
for IL I accidentally met Captain Hervey
and be was desirous of sending meals to
me. I told him I was a little short
at the Ume, but he said that waa all right
Abont a month ago he came to me and I
reiterated the prevloua statement of being
short of funds. My wife waa taken down
sick and necessarily incurred considerable
expense. In addition to her other sickness
she was taken with chills and fevers. For
two weeks it waa known that she was
going back home,as there was no necessity
for keeping inch a matter secret. She was
able to travel, and yesterday 1 had every
thing packed ready for her to go. In the
afternoon an officer arrived and levied
upon some of my goods, Including a trunk
containing my wtfa'a clothing. In (act
all the goods levied npon belonged to
my wife. They came here in her name
and were received by her. It was our In
tention lor her to go home and arrange
money matters in aucb a way that I would
t»- enabled to pay off my indebtedness in
Macon. 8h* it well fixed, and so is n
father. After the attachment was made,
went np town to consult a lawyer. Mr.
Bartlett, and thought the matter waa ail
over so far as my wife's leaving was eon.
cerned. Judge of my surprise when I
fonnd two officers at my house to arrest
me and bring me here! I bad no Intention
of leaving. Sh* waa to go and I wu to re
main here. My wife had a high
fever alt this afternoon, hut there
if a lady and her husband. Mr. Hirst,
living in the house, and 1 suppose they
will take care of ber."
How matters will be arranged to-day is
not known. At any rata it wu rather a
rare sight to see Mulhoiland in bis fault
less attire, Including the snow white cra
vat, walking about In the barracks cell
under the flicker of a gu jet.

The jury found lying upon a bed in a
small sbed room the body of an old man

attention she could. He complained
of having been sick with chronic diarrlio s
for the past sixteen mouths and bad been
taking for it a fluid extract of liux vomica.
He appeared to be very intelligent, and
though feeble ate ravenously ot ail food that
did not contain grease. He asked Mrs,
Fletcher to write to his daughter
in Orange county and to
tell her of ills arrival this
far on his way to Winterville, but as Mrs.
Fletcher wap busy at the time she neg
lected to get his daughter’s name. He said
he liked Macon, and spoke of settling here
and planting a vineyard. Last night he
sat upon the back steps and pieced his
head under the faucet and dampened his

ing tbe supper table and talked to him
about an hour before supper. She sent ids
