Startling Story of the Bent.
Philadelphia, August l.—The startling
story that the crew of the schooner Julia
Baker, from New York for Point au Pitre,
had mutinied, killed their captain, John
Lewis, and have b-et» selling the cargo in
the West Indies. led the owners of the
vessel. Mess s. Warner A Merritt, to insti
tute an inquiry by telegraph, as the result
of which tne collector of customs at Key
West now holds in custoiy the cup
tain and four more of the crew of
the Julia Baker, the vessel now being at
the latter port. The man arrested as Cap
tain Lewis does not answer to the descrip
tion of the Captain Lewis who took the
schooner from New York. The original
manifest is lost. The owners of the vessel
express the opinion that a mutiny occurred
on board the schooner, that a nght took
place iuorbich Captain Lewis was killed,
and that the crew, seeing that they were
in fur it, determine d to evil the cargo and
escape.

commissioners to speak today in
Union Square, and says that he intends
to be heard. He doe* not want to make
money, he claims, but wishes to speak for
the sake of humanity. The two lepers
have not been brought into the city, but
are said to be hidden somewhere In the
suburbs. Dr. O’Donnell says he is afraid
the Chinese consul and Chinamen of the
city would take possession of his charge*
if they knew where to find them.

Atlanta, August 1.—Since tbs great
fight of Wednesday the political situation
here is quiet and serene. The result of the
election seems to have given satisfaction
over the State, and as for Atlanta, at this
writing, it is uniformly for Hammond.
There is no talk of any further opposition
from any source for the nomination,
neither is there any intimation of an Inde
pendent candidate, while the party is
united and harmonious, and feels as
though It would like the chance to rise up
in its might and sit down very heavily
upon any candidate who might be venture
some and vainglorious enough to run in
opposition to the regulov nominee. There
seems to be a very general feeling of satis
faction that a bitter and hotly-contested
fight is ended and the campaign in the dis
trict practically e nded. The differences
between the contending elements are rap
idly disappearing, and the party in the
