The Markham House, as has been noted
in the papers, has passed into the hands of

gentlemen are experienced and successful
hotel men, which they are now demon-
stealing by keeping a first claw house.
I understand they have secured tue
lease of the Markham for ten years, at
nual rental of $9,000.
There was a small fire to-day in the hotel

with slight damage.
The body of young Jefferson, who com
mitted suicide last night, was prepared for
burial and carrld to the cemetery to-day.
Before it was interred a telegram wa«
received from Clayton, Delaware, saying.
‘•Embalm tbe body of my son. Put in a
metalic case, and send bill C. O. D. ’ The
body will be prepared as instructed and
shipped to Clayton to-night.
Col. E. F. Hoze, editor of the Journal, a
prominent member o! the last Legislature,
publishes an announcement this
afternoon that he will be n candidate
for re-election. This makes the field here
pretty full of candidates for the Legisla
ture-
Colonel W. A. Harris, of Worth, and
Hon. F. G. DuBignon.of Chatham, promi
nent members of the recent State conven-
tion^are still lingering in the city.
The opposition is preparing a slate
against the municipal ticket put out by the
late reform mass meeting.
To-morrow the 8alt Springs camp-meet
ing will hold forth, and a large party will
go out from this city. % _ .
Above Cartersvile. to-day, on the West
ern and Atlantic railroad, two freight
trains collided, resulting in two smashed
engines. There was no injury to any of
the trainmen.

Yesterday*
The executive committal* nf the Demo
cratic* party of Bibb county met at the
oourt house yesterday at 10 o’clock with a
full attendance.
Mr. G. W. Gusttn, the former chairman,
called the committee to order and tendered
his resignation as f. member of the com
mittee, because, as he stated, be expected
to be a candidate for the Legislature. The
resignation was accepted and Mr. Gustin
retired before the transaction of any fur
ther business.
Mr. W. A. tfavls was then called to the
chair, fer the purpose of effecting an or
ganization.
The name of Col. R. A. Msbet was put
In nomination, and he was unanimously
elected chairman of the committee. W.
A. Davis was re-elected secretary.
On motion of Maj. 0. A. Tharp®, tVe
primary system was adopted for nomin .t-
ing candidates for the Legislature,
Maj, Gibson moved that Tuesday, ho
9th day of September, be selected a* the
day for holding the nomination for legis
lative candidates—tbe polls to be opened

at the court-house from 7 o’clock a. m. to
6 o’clock p. m., and at the county precincts

Mayor Corput, when asked yesterday if
ho was in the race, replied: “No; I am
not a candidate, though strongly urged by
my friends to enter the race. I am very
much obliged to them, but the busiest sea
son of my business is about tho time the
Legislature is in session, and I cannot
afford to give up my business.”
The race will oe between Messrs. I/>fton,
Harris, Bartlett, Gustin, Lowe and Davis,
with probably one or two others, whose
names have been mentioned, but who have
not yet announced themselves.
