AoorsTA, Ga., August 22.—A spark in
the picker room of the Sibley cotton mill,
this city, this afternoon, communicated
fire to tiie opening room above, and in an
instant the third and fourth atorlea of the
picker house were ablaxe. Sprinkler! being
applied caused a dense smoke, which drove

running on full time.

by a nail or tlint rock passing through
the picker. The main mill was not dam

$10,000 to $60,000, fully covered by insu
rance in about sixty companies.

audience. The score was nine to six. in
favor of the Broarns.

A DEMOCRATIC CAMPAICN COMMITTEE

can Documents.
Wasbinotoh, August 22. — Secretary
Post, of the Democratic Congressional
campaign committee, discovered to-day
that that committee was inadvertently
helping along the Republican campaign by
illstribuii tg Republican documents. Tiie
Democratic committee baa been send
ing out aa one of its principal cam-
E aign documents a speech delivered by
enator Voorheea on tha imprisonment of
M('Sweeney, tiie Irish sn.pect, by Brilish
officials during the Garfield administration,
and copies of these Breeches are obtained
by the rommittee by requisition upon the
Senate folding room. Tney are delivered
to the committee in large quantifies,
several thousand at- a time, already
folded and in wrappers. They are ad.
dressed by the committee’s employes and
placed in the mails. It appears to have
been the custom of the committee to rely
altogether upon the integrity and cars of
the Senate folding room officials, and to
mail documents received by them without
examination. To-day, however, an employe
of the committee discovered, by accident
ally opening one of the comments he was
about to mril, that instead of Voprheea'a
speech, the committee waa distributing,
“where they would do the most good,” a
Republican campaign document en
titled “The History and Benefi
cence of Protection,” made up
of speeches o' the protectionist
side of the tariff discussion in the House of
Iteprc-entativcs last winter. An examina
tion followed and disclosed the fact that
all (he supposed Voorliees speeches in
imsscsaion of the committee were sopies
of this document. Secretary Post went
at ones to the superintendent of
the foding-room and took him to
task about the matter, and was informed
that the substitution of one document for
the other was an honest mistake. It is
not known how manv Republican docu
ments were sent out by tne Democratic
committee. They themselves have no
means of establishing the fact.

FRANK HURD NOMINATED.
The Erla and Part of tho Lucas County
DeltBatts Bolt the Nomination.
Sandusky, O., August 20—The Dcrao-
cra's of the Tenth Congressional district
held their convention at Oak Harbor to
day, at which Frank Hurd was nominated
by acclamgfion. The district is composed
of the counties of Lucas, including Toledo,
Erie, Ottawa and Ssndmky. Lucas coun
ty waa divided against Hurd, and Eric was
solid for Judge O. E. Merrill, of Saudusky
City. The Hurd managers, however, bad
a machine, and so adroitly did they man-
age it that no name except his was pre
sented ; but this was accomplished by the
bait ot nearly all of the Erie county dele
gates. There was great confusion and ex
citement in the convention up to the time
that Hurd was nominated, and an attempt
waa made by one of Hurd a men to draw a
revolver on E. D. l’allir, of Lucas county,
who spoke in favor of Judge Merrill.
There were three acts ot delegate! from
Lucas county. After a long contest the
matter waa referred to the committee on
credentials, which submitted two reports,
the majority being in favor of Hurd, The
minority report was acted on first and de
feated. Erie county voting solidly for It,
and when the result was announced left
the hall with the exception “of a few dele
gates. The Hurd men then made short
work of the convention, and he was nomi
nated with a rush. Tiie convention ad
journed to the street and the nominee ad
dressed the crowd from a carriage, arraign
ing the Republican party with telling effect
and re-affirming his positiou on tiie tarili.
The Erie county bolters assert that they
will vote for anybody to defeat Hurd, and
in this assertion they are joined bv a num
ber of the Lucas county kickers, Hurd,
however, is certain that he can overcome
all obstacles and receive a clean maturity.
He has already rur. six times for Coll-
5 rest, having been alternately erected and
pfeated. The district is considered Demo
cratie, Hurd's defeat having been attrib
uted to his ultra free trade views.
Tiie Republican convention will be held
in Fremont, August 23. The nomination
will be between T. F. Mack, of the San
dusky Register, and Kent Hamilton, a
Toledo attorney. It is expected, that in
this case Toledo will go away with the
honors, as she controls the lafgest number
of votes.

A NOBLE PAIR.
About 11 o’clock this morning two
horsemen could be seen moving slowly
down Pryor street toward police head
quarters. They were not solitary horse
men. They wore the garb of the mounted
police, and were driving before them two
negro boys, handcuffed together, and at
tached to their guards by a stout rope.
The prbccssion attracted almost as large
a crowd as the late baseball matches In
this citv. The prisoners were brothers,
and looked rery much alike and l»oth look
ed to be hardened criminals. It appeared
they were merely cow thieves. They cap
tured a cow lut night on the Green Ferry
road, from Gas Wilson, and succeeded In
selling her for twenty dollars. They were
captured this morning and jailed.
'Thieving ia getting to be so common
here that the law ought to he very strict

guilt Is not only very clear, but is not even
denied.
The generation of negroes now growing
up give ample promise olfilHng our jails,
keeping up the convict force to its full
complement, and will furnish abundant
fruit for the gallowl.. It is a matter of
very grave importance, and of dally growth,
that to many of these wards are averse to

now, but it will be hereafter.
