Robbery nnd Arson,
The small fire of Wednesday night, men
tion or w hich was made In yesterday’s paper,
was but the prelude to an extensive robbery
that was not discovered until yesterday morn-
hi*.
The residence next to Artope’a marble yard
oa Sc oud street Is occupied by Miss Lena
Au»tin, a dressmaker. About six o’clock on
Wednesday evening she locked up the house
and went ofT to fit a dress. About half past
c o’clock, n boy living on the promises heard
the squall of a cat in the house, and
the • squa’l was so peculiar that
Mo looked toward the house from which the
sound proceeded. Through the latticework
of the rear entrance, he saw a big blaze of
tire; he broke the slats in the door and rushed
in to find the house filled with smoke. He
then gave the alarm and sent for Miss Austin.
The tire, which was kindled In some myste
rious way in a aafe or pantry, In which was
store 1 some kindling wood a r d combustible
material, waa put out by means of buckets
before the fire department reached the scene
Yesterday morning Miss Austin bad oeca
•Ion to look Into a large Saratoga trunk in her
bedroom, and ber amazement can be imag-
it- i when she found the trunk empty. She
then in. d-5 an inspection of the house and
found that the door leading from the back
hallway Into the dining room had been forced
open; but whether the robbery was commit
ted during, heforo or after the fire waa a mys
tery she could not solve. ,
i.i ' . tenant Wood was placed In possession ^
the facta and he was also furnished with
a list of the articles stolen, of which the fol
lowing is a copy: One black silk dress pat
tern. one seal brown silk dress, ono bottlc-
gri i-u silk drees, one lady’s gold watch, one
gold locket with the name “Bertha” engraved
thereon, one gold pencil, a pair of button
shoes new, and a large lot of ladles’ under
wet r marked “Lena.’ r There was nothing
elvi taken from the room except some fancy
tidies from tho backs of cba'rs.
Mlaa Austin waa gone from home only one
hour and the robbery was committed within
that time.

It was developed yesterday that there are
two ladles In Macon claiming one man as a
husband.
sen ted mo-with a box of cigars. At tiie
conclusion of the, presentation speech he
proposed that we smoke the weed of peace.
I could not refuse. I faltered tny thanks,
lighted a cigar and pulled twice or tbrloe.
That vm nearly, eight yean ago, and yet
sometimes 1 am aroused from the pro-
fouiul^st slumber in the dead of night by
(be lingering farewell of that cigar. A po
liceman. who accidentally happened to be
awake that afternoon, came along and ar
rested me on a charge of disorderly con
duct, arson and assault with inteut to

smelled my breath as I pleaded notgullty,
and fined me $10. I went home, and a
committee of my neighbors waited on me
at long range, and gave me twenty-four
hours to leave the State. -1 left the box of
cigars on the office steps, and two tramps
were founu deaa beside it next morning.
The board of health .fllfid Information
against me for conspiracy, reixed the cigars
and threw them into the Mississippi river.
All the fish between Burlington and Keo
kuk died that week. I took down my
shotgun, breathed into it, pointed if at a
dog and he turned into a atone. I blew
fiercely down the barrel of thegun, intend-
mg to hunt for my foe, and the gun burst
on the spot. I—but why recount the har
rowing experiences of that week of horror ?
I only mention these few leading facts be-
c mse Troth with a big T is so «aaly seldom
during this campaign, and 1 wish to in
troduce a little of it to leaven the canvass.
No. if I knew I could lose all the hats
and win all the cigars in America on New
York alone, I would not bet that Mr.
Blaine will carry Georgia by ever so small
a majority. I expect to wear a straw hat
all winter, and I have given np the.use of
tobacco iu any form. 1 smoke only cigar

SYDNEY SMITH.
Chnrnoteilattes of a Humorist who An
ticipated the American School.
Andrew Lang In Harper’s Magazine.
When one tries to estimate the genius
of Sydney Smith what strikes one most is
his humor unaccompanied by melancholy
Most great humorists have been melan
choly men, like Moliere, Sydney Smith,
on the other hand, was not a jester only
in bis books and in sociely. Hie wonder
ful high spirits were almoet constantly
with him iu the home which they Ailed
with happiness and laughter. The es
sence of bis wit ie this volatile and airy
spirit, soaring without trammel high
above the laboring world, and discover
ing, from its familiar heights, mirthful re-
cemblances iu things where other men on
ly saw inedbgruities. Boldness, freedom,
vivacity, these are the characteristics of
his humor. He bad an extraordinary
audacity in venturing almost in the verge
of nonsense. He was daring in humor
ous exaggeration. This buoyant courage
and gayety of fancy sometimes give his
‘ things the character of American hu
mor.
He began bis “History of Ethics” with
Socrates and avowed that “Aristotle was
not such a fool as many people think who
hate never read him.” The early philos
ophers, he declared, “were gallant gentle
men, for whe se company, I confess, I have
never had any great relish.*' Again: “If
Orpheus or Linus sang, in bad verse, such
advice as a grand mother would now give
a child of six yean old be was thought to
be inspired by the got 4 s and statues or al
ien were erected to his memory.” The
good-humored irreverence to tho mighty
shades of Orpheus and Linus reminds
From what can be learned of the case, It one, in its frank Philistinism, of Mark

Donald In the dining-room of the National
Hotel, where be was engaged by Mr. J. C. Me-

ot Sydney Smith become* more boister

the superiority of man over the beast*.
To these he allows the rudiments ot our
faculties. Bat we, be remarked, live
longer, collect more experience, and are
gregarious, so that we communicate our
valuable discoveries to each ether. Uow
different is the conduct, he says, of the
nnprogresstvo lion! "A lion lives under a
bole in a rock, and if any other lion hap
pens so pass by they light. Now, whoev
er gets a habit of lying under a bole In a
rock, and fighting with every gentleman
who passes near him, can not possibly
make any progress. Again, lions ore un
communicative-very. Hence their sta
tionary culture. If lions would only come
together and growl out the observations
they htv* nude about killing sheep and
shepherds, and the most likely places for
catching a call grating, they could not fail
to Improve.” This ie quite in "Mirk's
way,’’ as Lord Ttnnyton says. Again,
when the Catholic* were oppressed in Ire
land Sydney Smith said to the clergy and
tb* Government: "Why do you choose
thee* fierce people to bully 7 Why don't
yon torment William Wilberforce and the

Again, he write* on pulpit oratory: " Why
