The Confirmation of Brrant.
The people ol Georgia were shocked at
the intelligence flashed from Washington
that John E. Bryant had been confirmed
as tbe United States marshal for the north
ern district o( the Slate, without protest
from their Senators. The fact that the
confirmation seemed to have quickly fol
lowed the appointment warrants the be
lief that both Senators voted (or the con
firmation. It is to be presumed that they
were in their places, and in the absence ol
any explanation, It is reasonable to pre
sume that Bryant received their support,
Bryant was appointed, not by reason of
hie fitness for the position in any reaped
but in return lor political service rendered
tbe President.
If his confirmation has been helped or
permitted by tbe Senators from Georgia, to
whom he and hie party associates may have
heretofore rendered valuable political eer
vice, it is sufficient to say that the people
yol Georgia were not parties to the contract
and received no benefit from the consider-
ikon.
If political obligations have thus been
squared it fa needless to sty, that such an
act should a.id does receive the unqualified
condemnation of every honest citizen,
may be said that Bryant was permitted to
go into office, lor the reason that he would
be a fit and e^sy person to remove, under
the new and coming administration.
Is there any assurance that Mr. Cleve
land will remove or suspend an official in
dorsed by the votes of two Senators from
the State in which tbe official keeps his
carpet bag!
Would not a Republican Senate be justi
fied In sustaining one of He friends, whose
confirmation had received the sanction of
the Senator! from Georgia? It this thing
has been done to conciliate Arthur, and
to make plain and easy tbe way for more
political dickering, is it not manifest that
there is ample margin lor a hitch in the
future proceedings?
These suggestions being met, let Its
look at the case upon its merits. What
claim has Bryant on the people of Geor
gia? For more than twenty years
he has been an active Cand
unscrupulous fomenter of political and
personal discord and strife between the
races. He could not possibly receive tbe
Indorsement of any respectable commu
nity, and if left to the votes of Ihe people
ot tbe State, his confirmation would be
unanimously rejected. He Is odious to all
respsclable people. The mention ot life
oareer in Augusta and elsewhere is suffi
cient to arouse resentment.
The Senators (rom Georgia were aware
of these facts, which are but mildly stated.
Do they represent the people, or political
cliques and cabala?
la the public business, the good order
end peace of society, to be subserved by
tbe appointment of a man to a high office
for the discharge of which be is notorious
ly unfit? Itoannot be Mid in mitigation
or defense that hla confirmation could not
have been prevented. Arthur attempted
ininlt end outrage the good
peop'e ot Alabama by a similar
nomination and Senators Pagh
and Morgan by a sturdy resistance Mved
their people from the wrong and -igno
miny. If Bryant baa bargained with the
Senators to kosp the place warm for oae
of their henchmen in return for their sup
port. then are the people of Georgia doebly
wronged, and a press that fails to proteat
against this whole matter in behalf ot the
people fails to comprehend and to dir
charge Its duty.

My atage name it Hampbat—you've
heard of th« Hamphet Brothers, tbe great
song and dtnee team, haven't you?”
The dramatic editor admitted that he
hadn't.
"Well, air, my partner, 'the world re

the northern circuit hut week, and the
reached up with hie mouth and took me
by the pants, and gave one shake that
broke my sospenders. Well, I did climb,
tnd he hung on to my ;anta, and they
came off over ray feet, end two other
dogs took hold and helped him tear them
no. My coat was hanging on a hook, and
they went for that, so all I had left was a
shirt I yelled for help, and I guest that
made tbe hounda think that I waa Eliza
in tbe play trying to escape into Ohio,
though I couldn't aee any reaemblence be
tween myself and a nigger wench, except
that there waa a good deal of coal smoke
on my penon, which mteht have fooled
the dogs. Anyway, they tried to climb up
lo where I was, and I threw valises at
them aa long as tbe valises lasted, and
then, aa the doge were barking at me, and
one waa climbing up the tranks, I canght
hold of a ventilator and pulled myself up
into the top of the car. I found I couldn't
banc on there long, so I threw one leg
over the bell rope, and it waa a welcome
sound when I heard the engineer blow
the whistle to atop. The train slackened
np, and I heard the condnclor blowing
the engineer for s Unplug. and asking who
pulled the rope, but just aa the conductor
S it abreast this car I yelled murder, and
le doge barked, and he came in at the
head of a crowd nf brakemen and ‘Uncle
I Tom’s actors. They knocked the dogs
, right and left, and I got down. If I live
to be a hundred years old I can never
forget that conductor.”
“Whet did the conductor do?" asked
tbe Board of Trade man, aa he broke oat
into a laugh.
“Do! He did juat what yon are doing
now, condemn you. When he saw me
hanging to the vsntilator with both hands,
and with tbe bell rope between my toes,
and the dogs standing on their bind fee
trying to take a ham sandwich out of me,
he laugh'd, then struck an attitude like
George Harrla, and said: 'My Ge-od, Eli

will stand between you and all harm. We
•hell yet be free,' and then he tipped a
trank over on a hound and said: "Com*
down, Eliza, and put on your pantz.”
Well, they got a pair of Unsle Tom's
pants out of a trunk and I wore them to
LaCrotse, and tbedoga were kept chained
np. but I nerer see a dog now without
wondering if my suspenders will bold out
