CONTEST WAS ION TO DECIDE WHO SHOULD HAVE HER. Wat a jrack't-Whlppfn; and the Other a gkatinff Race-Queer tray of Choosing a II a* band. ; ! i Miss Alice Grover and Richard Par sons, of Millington Green, Ct., were married a few days ago. This was the closing chapter in a romance of which the principal features are a jacket whipping contest and a skating con test. Bichard Parsons and Alexander Boyce, prosperous young farmers, be gan two years ago paying attention to Miss Grover, who was seventeen years - old, very pretty and vivacious. She appeard to have as deep regard for one as for the other, and neither could satisfy himself that bis suit was looked upon with favor. As the months rolled bv the two snitors began to eve each other jealously. Parsons called at the Grover home last May to invite Alice to attend a picnic. Be found that she bad already gone with Boyce. Parsons drove io the pic nic grounds and managed to work up a fight with Boyce. The friends of the two men finally got them apart. A week later Parsons challenged Boyce to a jacket-whipping contest, in which jackets were to play their parts. The men were to be bare above their waist*, their left hands to he tied to their bodies, and they were to thresh each other with walnut whips until quarter was called for. The worsted suitor was to allow the victor to win the hand of Miss Grover if he could. Parsoa’s challenge was promptly accepted, and the contest took place in a barn in the presence of a dozen friends of the con testants. The thrashing lasted until both men sink to the floor from ex- . haustioo. Miss Grover, hearing of this affair, refused to have anything more to do with either of the men, hut they continued so far as possible tbeir addresses to the youg woman until ehe ones more smiled upon them. Two weeks ago she told Parsons and Boyce that sb6 believed she loved one as well as the other, and that she had decided to bestow her hand upon the man who could prove himself most worthy of her in a skating contest. This contest was to be on Colton’s pond, a mile from Millington Green, and to last two evenings. The skaters were to start from opposite sides of the pond at 7 o’clock and skate until 10. Parsons was to do his best to catch Boyce the first night. The second night Boyce was to catch Parsons. If, between the hours mentioned during the two nights, the men failed to over haul each other, the contest was to go on every night until one of the men was caught. If Parsons caught Boyce the first night and Boyce caught Par sons the second night, the contest was to bo continued two more nights until it was decided which was the better man. The shores of Colton’s pond were lined with spectators when the contest began, and fires were burning around the poud. Miss Grover wit nessed the struggle. The first night * Parsons caught Boyce after nearly three hours skating. On the second evening Boyce failed In his efforts, and the referee declared Parsons* the win ner. koyce took his defeat very much to heart. Miss Grover seemed to be well satisfied with the result and readi ly consented to an early marriage. He And t he. From the New York Lodger. They sit together before the fire. Be has not been suc cessful in life, she has not been happy, Fortune and death have robbed them of everything that they held dear, and have left them but the one tiling for which they do not care—life. “Do you remember,” he asks, “when wc were children together? We used to play together every day, and I used to carry your books to school for you and home again, and vou would Bave the greater part of your sweets which your mother gave you, for me.” “Yes, I remember,” she answers. “We were very happy then.” “And do you remember,” he con tinues. “the day wo stood up together before the alter, you in your white dress, I in ray broadcloth? Who would have thought then that I would not be successful, and that you would not be happy all your life? I thought that with you by my side I could conquer the world if it were neccessaty.” “Yes, I remember,” she answers “Wo were very happy then.” “And do you remember,” he says again, “the day we took our first child to be baptized ? Wo were very happy then, and very proud. And wo dream ed that wo would spend our old age in' the loving arms of children, wealthy, honored and loved.” “Yes, I remember,” she answers, “We were very happy then.” “But uow—uow—”he says, and can not go on, for there i3 a tear In I1I3 eye and a great lump in bis throat. “Now,” she answers, clasping his withered hand lovingly in hers, “I am happier thau I have ever been before In my life, although until just now I did not realize it. I am very happy, because God, though he lias taken everything else from me, has left me you.” ODDS AND ENDS. t "“ When Mayor Grant entered his A Itlilliim Friends.
