Mondiy afternoon aboat 4 o’clock
the steamer City of Albany announced
her arrival by the shrill blast ot the
whistle and Mr. J. M. Tift who was
near the river watched the appioach
of the vessel with great interest.
As the boat tied up at the wharf at
the foot of Broad street Mr Tift engag
ed in coaversatlon with the Captain,
H. H. Rouse, and while talking to
the latter spied two alligators on the
deck ot the steamer.
Where did you get them ?” asked
Mr. Tift.
I shot them on ray way up between
here and Newton. I will give you
hit large one if you want it.”
Mr. Tift was just preparing.to offer
to buy one when Capt. Rouse made
the offer. Tbc alligator, fully ten feet
in length and weighing between 2JO
and 3G0 pounds, was pkerd on a wag
on and takeu to Mr. Jim Camp’s fish
stand. On a table in the rear ofthe
buildiug it was stretched out and Lem
Weston, the well known fisherman,
proceeded to skin it.

side, and would move his claws as if
in the act of swimming. The first
ing done was to. drive a knife

The skin was taken from him and
Mr. Tift obtained some fine steaks that
he will enjoy. Capt Rouse carried his
’gator home to be used aa meat.

gators Capt Rouse said. “There is no
telling how many alligators I could
kill on each trip, bat I quit killing
them because as soon as they are shot
they sink, and by the time I make the
next trip the odor is not very pleas

Mrs. Black stops at Albany
it is noted for its healthfulness and for

artesian water. They are quartered
at the Inn. They come at a good

water was considerably reduced the
council granted Col. E. L W\ght and
other-well owners the privilege of tap
ping the big well bored for the pur
pose of supplying ihe water-works.

tapped.

terday and its supply is now flowing
through the pipes that supply Col. E.

laying a pipe from the large well

North Street to a point opposite Cru-

son street. He had ordered the pipe
for this purpose and it having arrived
was pat down as fast as the ditch was
dug.
Thursday afternoon connection wa3
made with Co!. Wight’s main on Jef
ferson street and at 3 o’clock the water
was turned on from the large artesian

And It caused a beautiful flow. It
was strong. It waa like tbe drink that
is taken by a certain well known party
in tbe city^It had power behind it ot
with ir, as tne ca«e maybe. At first
there was the usual sputtering noise
made by the escape of the air In the
pipes but after that the tflia of the
faucet gave forth » bold gushing
stream,
The patrons of Col. Wight will now
find their pipes ready to give forth a^
stronghold stream at any time
flow of 22$ gallons per minute bave
been added and if tbe city buys Col
Wight’s well on April first this supply
as it flows at present will give no one
cause to complain.

away from them and looking upon tbc
advertising scheme as an infringement
on their rights called upon the chief
of police to make a case against the in
vader.

was hauled np before His Honor,
Mayor Gilbert. The mayor cot
nothing to warrant him in imposing a
