Thought 16 oe Incendiary.
About two years ago the County
Commissioners had neat and substan
tial structures erected iu the different
militia districts in which the justices
of the peace could hold their courts.
These structures we're one-roouied
frame buildings with good brick chim
neys nnd cost probably a hundred dol
lars each.
But yesterday mornfng the one In
East Dougherty was destroyed by fire.
The fire was discovered about 4 or 5
o’clock but had made such headway
that it was impossible to stop the rag
ing flames and the building was a to
tal 1083.
The bulldingdiad been used also as a
village school house and was a very
convenient public structure. It is
thought that the Are must have been
incendiary and that tramps must have
tired It. Several times lately tramps
have beeu found who slept in this
building while making theit Bohe

' thought some one or more such chat

people to penance. Hense the priest,
whilst putting tbe ashes on tbe bead
says: “Remember, -man, that thou

Is to be taken up in all the churches
on the first Sunday of Lent, for the
missions among the Indians and color
ed people.
“We require all pur clergy to re
mind their flocks to give liberally for
this good work, aud to forward the
amount to our Vicar General in Savan
nah. They should also read the gen
eral regulations for the observance of
the Lenton period on each Sunday
during Lent.
“The following are the laws for
Lent in the diocese of Savannah:—
“Ash Wednesday, the first day of
Lent falls on the 2d of March.
“1. All the faithful who have com
pleted their 21st year are, unless leg!
dmately dispensed, buond to observe
tbe fast of Lent.
“2. They are to make only one
meal a day excepting Sundays.
* 3. The meal allowed on fast days
is not to be taken until about neon.
“4. Flesh meat and fish are not to
be used at the same meal daring Lent.
“5. A small reire3hment, com man
ly called coTTation; is allowed in the
evening, not to exeeed the fourth part
of an ordinary meal.
“7. At the collation it is permitted
to use bread, all kinds of fruits, salads
and vegetables. Tbe use of butter,
cheese, milk and eggs Is also tolerated
by virtue of long established custom.
“7. General usage has made it law
ful to take in tbe morning, some warm
liquid, as tea, coffee, or thin chocolate
made with water, and a mouthful ol
bread.
“8. Necessity and custom ha vs nu
thorized the U3S of hog’s lard instead
ot butter in preparing permitted food
“9. The following persons are ex
empted from the obligation of fasting:
Persons under twenty-one years of age,
the sick, nursing women, those who
arc obliged to do hard labor, all who,
through weakness cannot fast without
great prejudice to their health.
“10. By virtue of an indult granted
to the bishops of these provinces,
under date August 3, 1S87, the use ol
fiesh meat will be allowed at all meals
on Sundays, and once a day on Mon
days, Tuesdays, Thursdays and Satur
days, with the exception of the second
and last Saturdays in Lent.
*11. Persons dispensed from tbe
obligation ot fasting, on account of
tender or advadeed age, bard labor or
ill health, are free to take meat more
than once on those days when its use is
granted by dispensation.
“12. The faithful are reminded that
besides the obligation of fasting im
posed by the church, this holy season
of Lent should be in an especial m in
ner a time of earnest prayer, of sorrow
for sm, of selusion from tbe world and
its amasement?, and of generous alms-
giving.
“13, The Pascal time extends from
the first Sunday in Lent till Trinity
Sunday, during which time ail Catho
lics who have attained the use of reason
are bound to prepare themselves to re-
ctlvo worthily holy communion. Tl|e
seasou of Lent is a proper time, also,
for children to gj to their first confes
sion, which they ought to do when
about 7 years of age. Parents and
teachers should see to this.

vehement protest. The men were ail an

fought battle, they should lie robbed
of ihstr rightful chains to tbe victory.
Longstreet ordered his afij itaat t«rre-
