The very latest street gowns are not
made a la street sweepers.
. The swellest dressmakers say this
season that evening gowns must he
made of silk- All the same many of
the prettiest and dainty are made cf
other fabrics.
How much more comfortable are the
soft silk skirts, the fine cambrics and
laces. Soft is good fortune that tne
stiff starched skirt has gone out, long
may it remain away.
Some of this season’s shirt waists
are strongly reminiscent of the old-
time Garibaldi. Both the full blouse,
the first form in which the Garibaldi
appeared, and the tigbe-drawn waist
with a belt, nto which it afterwards
developed are among this year’s pat
terns.

I know, where fat is used. You have |
no sufficient depth of pan to ensure {
the article cooked being thoroughly j
covered, and a small quantity of fat |
-burn3 very quickly, and, of course,
once bnrned, is unusable. Ask your
cook how olten she use3 her frying fat.
If she opens her eye3 wide and says,
f‘Why x once, of course!” the mystery
Js explained. Using only butter for
' frying, and using that fresh each time,
will folly account for the length of
i vonr dairyman’s bill, without laying
open your cook to any worse charge
than ignorant extravagance.
SOME I01LY JOKES
Red is a picturesque feature of moun
tain toilets and couutry costumes. Red
cloth jackets and capes appear on the
coach and in the carriage; red ulsters
os rough finished twilled cloth form
part of the luggage with which the
good-natured summer youg man is en
cumbered on the sailing or boating
expedition, and red sack-back coats,
with enormous white buttons, are used
for driving and morning wear. '~
Quite a novelty just now in Paris is
the Crispin belt. It is a heavy ribbed
silk ribboD, abou; ten inches wide,
passed through a tail buckle of chased
silver. These buckles are about
eleven inches in height, and slightly
curved to fit the form of the body.
But don’t you remember them? We
had a-good imitation of them, and they
were quite universally worn, too,
about two years ago. No doubt,
though, they will come hack to us on
a little higher scale this year.
AN 3SLEGANT NOVELTY.

Dead Sirs—1 was attacked with La

time was persectly well, while others
who failed to use the ’Poise were sick

it heartily to all mothers.

A most elegant novelty in decora
tive tableware, which is too costly to
ever become vulgarly common, is sor
bet glasses of Russian crystal made at
the royal factory of the Czar. They
ate a renaissance of the old Byzantine
enameled glasses. It was in the By
zantine Empire that the art of enam
eling was carried to its greatest perfec
tion, and these ancient achievements
are descended -to the Rassian workers
of the present day in this line. The
price of a half dozen of these glasses is
$50, but then each one of them is an in
dividual' bit of art, as each is quite
different from all the others in design.
A TIN-LINED HJNCH BAG.
Just to what U9e it is possible to put
a tomato can is illustrated iu this little,
contrivance of a lunch bag. Be care-
Tnl to select a tomato can that is round;
even, and in perfect order; remove the
top with a pair of pinchers so the edge
will be smooth and not ragged, then
empty the tomatoes into a dish, soak
the label off the can, and scald it out.
When the can is clean and dry, make a
bag Of gray linen, with circular bot
tom, to fit the can. Draw the opening
together at the top by means of brown*
cord draw-strings. Make the handles
of double thickness of linen, and cover
four button-molds with embroidered
linen as ornaments, to be fastened on
the bag where the handles are sewed
on the cover. Before making up the
'bag embroider on one side a pretty de
sign in washable brown silk, also the
initial letter -of your own name, or
of that of the name of the person who
is to use it. u
BUTTER FOR COOKING FCRPOSES.
It is best to use fresh batter always,
and economize in other ways. “Cook
ing batter” is a mystery usually, and
one I do not care to fathom. Nothing
but the very best salt butter can be
used successfully for sauces, and for'
this the price differs so very slightly,
if at all, from that of fresh batter that
it can scarcely be called economy to
risk yonr sauce for an infinitesimal
fraction of a penny. For puff pastry,
many cooks consider butter indispen
sable, in which, by the way, I do not
agree with them;. hut they would be
the first to acknowledge ’that well
clarified dripping or honest lard
would be infinitely preferable for or
dinary purposes to the so-called “cook
ing butter.” .There are only very
few things that must be. fried in but
ter, which is for general purposes a
very bad frying medicine, as it
“catches” so easily. Always insist on
yonr cook frying in sufficient fat to
submerge whatever she has to fry.
Frying in a fryingpan is one of the
most extravagant methods of cooking

The mortality from what are called -
winter diseases is not easily estimated.
Coughs, colds, bronchitis and' sore
throat make up fully one-half of the
death rate. More people die from pneu

Tine bluebottle’s bksi lye.
Bozzfrfg end nay iu the early tiawn,
r r.'Mi irfin a nap on the parlor wall,
Out fur a li.ght over garden and lawn,
Fearing no trouble and dreading no
fall,
Came a fly—
A lively, frolicsome, bluebottle fly—
* And liis feet ^
Were as neat.
And his style
As complete,
As his brain -
Was replete
With the mischief that laughed in his
eye!.
“What glorious fun I’ll have today.
When the baby’s asleep and the nurse
away;
When Rover lies by the. kitchen door;
I’ll awaken them both and make them
roar!
Oh, what a lark!”
Cried the rolicking, reckless bluebottle
flv;
“What a cry,”
Said the fly,
“There will be,
Alter me,
When I’ve done
With my fun!”
And be wickedly winked his wee,
wee eye.
“Then I’ll go and dance on grandpa’s
head.
While he struggles to brush me
away;
And tickle his ear till he’ll wish I was
dead,
And over the dinner at table I’ll
nlay S
Back and forth,
And feast on crumbs from a Ireshy
’ baked pie;
U And I’ll slip
From the lip
Of each glass
That may pass
All sweet things
Dinner brings!” .
Quoth this riotous bluebottle fly.
But, alas! for the plans be had laid,
And ala3 for the day just begun,
For this fly soon lit in the grateful shade
To escape the hot rays of the sun,
And to dream
Of the sights that should soon meet his
eje,
When, unseen,
From the green
Of a limb
Above him,
On his head, -
• By a thread,
Fell a spider,
Whe coolly devoured that bluebottle
fly. ' --
