Newspaper Page TextNuclear Power Used To Produce Electricity JO SLADE Home Economist Georgia Power Company This summer, Georgia Pow er Company completed its first nuclear generating plant, the Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Plant, near Baxley. Electricity produced at the new plant will be the same as that produced at any of the coal, 011, natural gas or hydrelectrlc generating facil ities. The uranium fuel used at the plant Is more plentiful than oil or natural gas. For this reason it is essential that we begin to use uranium fuel now, lessening our depen dence on scarce and increas ingly expensive 01l and gas and freeing these fossil fuels for vital transportation and manufacturing uses. While there is enough coal to meet the state's electric needs for many years, much of it cannot be used without the addition of costly environ mental protection equipment which adds to the cost of pro ducing electricity. Nuclear power plants produce only small amounts of air pollu tants. In fact, nuclear power plants have even less envir onmental Impact than hydro electric generating facilities. Since only small quantities of nuclear fuel are required, Cleaner Lungs For Children Swallowing chips of lead paint is not the only cause of lead poisoning In children. Car exhaust Is also a culprit. Lead concentrations In the blood of more than 5,000 chil dren were measured by a re search team from Rutgers University and the College of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. Comparisons were made for children liv ing close to a major traffic street and those living farth er away. The researchers found that children living near a major traffic street had much high er levels of lead In thelr blood than those living a block or more away. The findings were reported in a recent pub lication of the American Med ical Association. Hatch Nuclear Plant begins producing electricity later this year, Georgians will become aware of the benefits from the 10 years of work and $365 million invested in this plant. The first unit of the Edwin I. Hatch Nuclear Plant will have a generating capacity equal to 10 per cent of Geor gia Power's entire system.
