Local Brevities. * There was a musical and comical on tertainment given by the Blind Min strcls/Clifford <fe Aiiey, last Saturday evening at Strickland’s Ilall. The entertainment given by the Li¬ brary Association, last Friday evening, was a grand affair. We will desist fur¬ ther comments and refer our readers to the communication of “One of the Audience.” Mess. Pike, Johnson & Co , receiv¬ ed a car load of extraordinary looking mules per the way freight, yesterday. Just received and opened at J W . Strickland's a full line of spring and summer goods. It. E. Every body seems to he gunning as though we had no incorpo¬ ration—shooting allover the town at birds, regardless of life or property. A few days since, Win, Davis, Esq. brought a negro in town that was com pletely insane, and appearently dumb,, and placi d the unfortunate in the store piazza of one of our merchants, and left him. Mr. Davis says he found the in¬ dividual all alone in the forest and was nearly starved to death when he took charge of him. Last Sunday night, the Kith instant, Mr. i>. D. Brantley’s store was hoken into and robbed of about $100., in ^oods; such as pistols, knives ready made clothing, ifec. The thief made his enternnee by ripping off a board ol the window and reached in and un¬ bolted the same. We heard a young man say, a few days ago, that he did not propose to work by Johnson’s mill whistle, that he had a whistle of his own he went bv; indeed he has went so far by it all ready that it would make him whistle to get a decent job any where. “You can t. eat enough in a day to last you a year, and you can’t advertise on that plan, either.” To those wanting a first class shave Are., will he cheerfully waited upon by calling at,). Mr7 Editor :— Allow me space in your excellent to say something o mcerning t !, e paper delightful entertainment given 1 »st Week by the Libiary Association So porlectly was every thing managed, and so inimitably w:t- each character sustained, that it seemed indeed, we must he before professorial*, and noth¬ ! ing but our personal acquaintance with the members could have assured us it j was an amateur troupe ‘Who certainly is Who” j ts well rendered, and is one of the most amusing and witty farces ! Each character deserves to he specially mentioned, but “The model young Bachelor,” and the Valet dc Chambre can not he passed over, “The model j young Bachelor was placed under very frying circumstances, and might have embarrassed a less of a model, butj throughout fie acted well the part, and to perfection—“the getting r» d in l}ie face.” The Valet de Chambre reflected credit upon himself and the wholetrdup. There are very few who could bpve thrown themselves so completely in\o the character and sustained it so well So completely were they ‘all in the fog\ and so mirth creating was the play throughout, that we are tempted to compare it to “The Comedy of Errors. ’ VYe handy had time to recover from the exertion of continued laughter, be¬ fore the curtain went up on.the cosy breakfast scene, tlie*hcginnirmf of “The Wandering Minstrel.” From begin¬ ning to end this was a fine play. Every one looked on with thrilling interest: more especially as it was known to be an original play, or, almost entirely so, arranged by the very proficient mana¬ ger of the, troupe. There was some¬ thing to please all. What a treat for lovers of music; for the music was all of a high order, except “Jem Bags’” comic songs, which were richly enjoy¬ ed by strong contrast. No doubt many would he delighted to see named, the songs that were sting, Vocal music in the Wandering Minstrel. Duct Moonlight., inurie, Love and Flowers— Mr. Crinkum and Ju lia. Solo. Last but not leiist, except in size an \ y 0ars , eomes the beautiful little n-mer, who played with such exact nes< ar ,*l skill, that the singers must needs do their parts well, Every one mu*t feel an interest in these Lnt (, rta mnents, toi it is such an advantage to the joungpeople, it is lik® a continuation of school, it will tend more to perfect their education than 9”y thing else they can engage n 3 in Very great credit is due to the mana¬ ger, whose interest and zeal is untiring and whose knowledge of such things is perfect. May these Entertainments not be •* like Angels visits, tew and far between, hut he given as often as it is con venient to piepaie foi them. *- One of the Audience / PliEACHIMi.-W? are reques ted to announce preaching at the Bap¬ tist Church, next Sunday morning at the usual hour, h»the'pastoi«n charge and also, preaching at night.™ The sub jects are—morning on “Ministerial Support;” evening on “The Power of the Cross.” Our farmers cling to the idea that guano will pay them a profit at the present high prices, and is supplying thenis- Ives with a sufficiency for tneir crops. We are not a farmer and per¬ haps not a competent judge of this mat ter,, hut where the profit is we can not pereeieve—in other words we oppose the guano speculation. If our good fanners will go to work and make their own fertilizers at home, in three years time, in our opinion, can perceive with Gut a doubt, that they are on the gain¬ ing ground and high road to prosperity and the home made compost prove to he two hundred and fifty per cent'bet¬ ter adapted to their soil. Farmers, why hot' drop this mode of commer¬ cial speculation and resolve to make in the future, your own fertilizers inde pendent to speculating corporations? r. g.
