Road commissioners and overseers are discussing tl e road subject now a days.—Court near at hand, prehaps is what are sparing them up. A. X. Smith, was fixing up to go on the Cincinnati Excursion to day but learned through soutj of the ofHe ials of the road that he was too late to make the proper connections. Owing to the heavy advance on all kinds of printers material and stationery we cannot print as cheap as heretofore But don’t let the assersion d.ive y° u some where else; they all have the duty to pay and we wi 1 do it as cheap as the cheapest. We answer them assuredly, but we will try and furnish all such some hash to eat if they will come and follow us a week, and they’ll think at the end, that they have not been loafing. A Letter from Charlton County [communicated.] Ciiari.ton County, Ga , March 15, 1880. Editor News : Will yon allow me a small space in your valuable little paper purposely to let you and your many readers know just bow we have suffered down here by the notorious chicken thief that have been parading over our community for some time stealing every chicken that was pos¬ sible for t Item to get; I think in my estimation that it beats any thin g on record. Some Line in January they com¬ menced their piltev and plundering houses, gardens and potato banks of every body they came to. The first sufferers were Geo. Johns, Rachel Pell unis, Paul Johns, and Joe Johns. The intruders went to all those places in one night an robbe* all their foul houses and carried their game to one Nancy Crews, and there they had them cooked and indulged 1 imagine in one oi thepi rich old suppers. The second night they went to Susan Crews, Arch Crews, and wtold several head of chickens and went to the same Naney Crews, and had an other “chicken stew’’ at expense of those who were wrapped in the slum¬ bers of the night. The third rade was threatened Mrs. Jensey Crews, and that they would not leave her a single chicken, This give her such a fright that she went and got Noah Crews to come and watch her tout house during the night, which he done cheerfully not least thinking of his own danger. While the midnight hours were, to him no doubt slowly passing by, and the enemy expected every minute and him his vigils keeping, and the enemy mistrusting bv some means or other the plan laid to defeat them, went to his (Noah) place in ids absence and got twelve head ot chickens and one turkey, and went to Tye Crews, and had a frolic and a chicken pie. The fourth night they went to Mrs. Me Lean’s and stole five middlings of bacon several joles and hams. T he same night they went to Mrs. Sallie McLeans and stole two more chickens. The fifth night they went to Francis Crews, but by some means the family discovered them and attemped to de feat them when the intruders rebelled against being interfered with, shot in to the house hitting Jessee Crews and two of his sisters, but the shot being small did no damage, Jessee rolled in the house and cries out “Oh Lord, Father, I'm shot" ihe faintly being conqured gave up to the enemy and let them take all their chickens. This thiug goes further yet but for NO. 1. ._ r i tear of wearying your patience I w ill leave the rest unwritten as it only repeats the foregoing and I will drop the subject.
