With this issue the News enters upon its fourth volume. With bowing and tipping our hat we thank our former customers and patrons for their favors and hope, in the future, to be able to merit a continuance of the same, and add new ones to our list. While it is impossible for one man to please every body we do not think that we have made a single enemy through the medium of our little paper, and if so, we are willing to make amends for any thing that we have done amiss. We are glad to see that our efforts are not entirely void of appreciation, and can say that the prospects before us are promising uit f we (rope to realize our expecta¬ tions and not lie decieved iu our calculations. Our exchanges have a good deal to • ay about the munps. We have been iortionnte so far to escape. There has been more cotton carried to Ml. It was done about 5 o'clock iu the evening and he being unable to secure any medical assistance had to suffer until the next day. However, he was seen the next morning on the street engaged in a “giggling con¬ versation,” which showed that he was a fraud, and ought to go l ’ the “only” Lung Pad Company. The “bar” is full Jury all in parties and witnesses all present Eleven o’clock and we do not hear the voice of the Sheriff at the Court House, meet the clerk and ask what’s the matter, and is informed that the Judge has not arrived, suppose he will come on the one o’clock train or receive a dispatch to adjourn over until morning, and at the time ap¬ pointed his Honor arrives deposits his baggage and walks deliberately to court house takes his seat orders the Sheriff to proceed to call the Jury, perhaps some one supposing he would be all right in time got “tile" and is fined ten dollars which is all right. Hut we never hear even and excuse from his Honor and every thing goes on smoothly after perhaps a half or a whole day is lost to the county. I ask the question, is he not amenable to some tjibunal or is he a privilage charactert because he has a salery who is able to come on Saturday if he does not wish to travel on Sunday. If there is no tribunal to which he is amenable there should be. Again, court adjourns to meet at nine in the morning Juries, parties, and witnesses standii<’ around the court house notice that court is in session, all not having the correct time with his ° Honor, . informs Juror th;it sonic one u he had better » go in, whohurrysin and ittids the clerk has Just finished cull ,, ing the list his name is marked, this is all right as they should be prompt. Hut suppose his Honor is ten minutes late all is well; again a case is called and some motion is made which meets opposition from the other side and an apjieal is made to his honor and he is not prepared to d cide, he does not turn to the “Code or rules of practice" but allows couucel to search up au thorites by •running through many mtmbers of “Georgia Reports" and finally finds a simui.tr case which was decided , . twenty or more years ago . by the Superior court under some statute which has been repealed and the Judges dead or out of office, and after an hour or |uore being consumed the time of the country and expense of the county, he is able to decide the question which might have been done in two minutes.
