What are the effects of different kinds •f intellectual work on the cerebral eir eolation? This question M. Gley, a French physiologist, has made attempted answer When by experiments applied himself_ npon to self. he a subject which he had a difficulty inun derstanding thoroughly, and had, there fore, to concentrate all his energies upon it, the rhythm of the heart was far more accelerated than when he took np some matter with which ho was well acquamted. Germany will It is expected has already that done so) soon seek (if she not the co-operation of other powers in es tablishing an exploration of the Polar regions in the interest of meteorology, geology and other sciences, as was proposed by the late Karl W eyprecht. I» a note to the Vienna Academy of Sciences,Dr.Margules calls attention to the beautiful figures that are produced in glycerine when the liquid is moved in a regular way by the rotary of a 4 disk in contact with it. The figures are due to the water in the glycerine. A railway for general travel, on which the cars arc propelled by electricity, has been successfully opened between Rich terfelde, a suburban station on the Berlin-Anhalf railway, and the military academy in Berlin. It is about a mile 1,B< 1 a half long. One rail is used as a positive and the other as a negative cop ductor. The primary machine and steam engine for generating electricity is a third of a mile frem Lick ter le hie, and the current is conveyed from there to the rails by underground cables. The ears are like ordinary railroad cars, and carry twenty passengers and a guard. The car has a starling lover and a break at each end, and can move either for¬ ward or back wi£. facility. The power is conveyed to a dynamo machine under the car, and thence applied to the wheels. The car can be safely ran the w hole distance (one and a half miles) in five minutes. There is no noise or smoke. This is the first practical appli¬ cation of electricity to railroad propul¬ sion. Dr. Richardson, giving an account of some researches which have been re¬ cently instituted into the periods of in¬ cubation of infectious diseases, states that twenty-six diseases of this kind which are well-known have their special periods of incubation which, though The open period to exceptions, of incubation are fairly is defined regular. as that period which intervenes between tho acceptation of the poison and the first manifestation of effect. Diseases may be divided according to their stages of incubation into five classes—shortest, short, medium, long, longest. The short est period is one of four days ; it, rules for plague, cholera, malignant, pustule and dissection poison. The second pe¬ riod is from two to six days, and covers scarlet fever, diphtheria, croup, erysip¬ elas, whooping cough, influenza, glan¬ ders and pyaemia. The medium period is from four to eight days, and The includes cow-pox and relapsing fever. loDg periodTis from ten to fifteen days, and includes mumps, measles, typhus and typhoid. The longest period is forty days. • V.' el Food. A Leipsio arifee physician, Dr. Beck, has written an on the moral effect of different articles of food, in which he says: “The nervousness and peevish¬ ness of our times are chiefly attribut¬ able to tfii and coffee ; the digestive organs of Confirmed coffee drinkers are in a state of chronic derangement which reacts on the brain, producing fretful and lachrymose moods. Many ladie3 addicted to strong coffee have a charac¬ teristic temper, which I may describe saint. as a mania for acting tho persecuted Chocolate is neutral in its psy¬ chic effects, and is innocent. The snap¬ pish, petulant humor of the Chinese can be ascribed to their fondness for tea. Beer is brutalizing, wine impas sio:;«i, whisky Alcoholic infuriates,-but eventually unmans. ilrinks, combined with a flesh and fat diet, totally snb jugate the moral man, unless their in¬ fluence be counteracted by violent ex¬ ercise. But with sedentary habits produce those unhappy flesh sponges which may be studied in metropolitan bachelor halls, but better yet in wealthy convents. The Scientific American gives the fol¬ lowing recipe for getting rid of stump»; “In autumn or early winter bore a hole one or two inches in diameter, ac¬ cording to the girth of the stump, and about eighteen inches deep. Fut into it one or two ounces of saltpeter, till the hole with water, and plug it close. In the ensuing spring take out the plug and ignite it. The stump will moulder away, without blaring, to the nothing very extremity of the roots, leaving but the ashes.” A child, or monster, was bom lately in a town of South Italy. It (or he) was of the masculine sex and had two heads, t wo arms in the usual place with one hand each, a third arm rising out of the back and furnished with two hands, one body and two feet. The creature did ■ot live. There are 390 educated female physi¬ cians in active practice in twenty-six states of our Union—the majority in Massachusetts, New York and Pennsyl¬ vania. The stage settings of Hoolev’s Thea¬ ter, in Chicago, are so arranged on Sun¬ days as to represent a pulpit, and the congregation that gathers is very large. Birds are imported by tbe box [for trimming autumn bonnets. Comets Viewed from Balloons. Recently a paper bv M. W. deFon vielle was read before the Balloon So ciety, in which the author described the appearance of comet “b,” 1881, as seen him at midnight, irom the car of a balloon. The brilliancy of the light which the comet showed when the bal loon reached a height of more than one thousand metres, increased in a very large proportion, notwithstanding the transparency of the atmosphere. So f ar as conld be judged of similar changes without the assistance of optical instru meats,’it seemed that the brilliancy had increased about half beyond its normal brilliancy as seen from the than earth. The tail was a little longer seen from the earth, but most remarkable wa 3 the manner in which it terminated, for it was cut off straight, as if a line were drawn over it horizontally with a ruler, T fci 8 singular circumstance made M. de Fonvielle think that the phenomenon might be terminated by a fleeev cloud, The appearance of the tail was as if too dncedby legions of large stones travel ingin the planetary space independently of the comet and having no other con nec tion with it ‘ban that of being tem porarily lighted ov f\e rays which its atmosphere had cau id to deviate, more or less, from their natural route. These myriads of remnants of worlds would therefore produce the same effect as dust lighted bv a ray of sun admitted into a dark room through a crevice. M. de Fonville dwelt npon this theory at some length, and insisted that it was to this canse'that the zodiacal light was in probability to be attributed. He also insisted that astronomical invest! ga tions should include ballooning. (Cleveland Leader.] Mr. Orlando Weatlierbee, says an ex¬ change of ours, proprietor “The Spencer Pharmacy,” Spencer, Mass., reports: My customers speak very highly of the great German remedy, St. Jacobs Oil, it having always given excellent satis¬ faction. One of the moat common of these complaints is Leucorrhasa or Whites, which are brought on either by tho presence of Scrofula in the system, or by some affection of the womb, or even by general dobility. For all these complaints, and when danger begins to threaten woman at tho turn of life, Vegetise can be com¬ mended without qualification.
