Oil Discoveries. Prefer Their Own Ideas. Macon Telegrrpb. The recent discoveries of crude petroleum in considerable quanti ties near Johnstown, Yew York, come just at a time when . grave doubts are entertained as to the future of the oil supply in this country. For some time past the consumption of American petrol e- New lork mil and Express. Yery few artists care to paint pictures to order and conform their canvases to the tastes and ideas of a prospective purchaser. They pre fer to follow their own inspirations entirely, and sell the picture after it is finished.' The experience of artists with .patrons who want Gen. E. P. Alexander, Presi dent of-the Central Railroad, -is preparing for an extensive increase in the freight business on the lines of that system of roads. The ter minal facilities at Savannah, Macon, Columbus and Eufaula will be largely increased, and then the business can and will Tie han dled with less delay and friction. LIFE OF. THE f HOI, JEFFERSON DAVIS, MRS. JEFFERSON DAYIS. To cut kindlings and to sing, if they can./ To help the boy smaller than themselves. To put every garment in its proper place. Not to tease boys smaller than themselves. To be honest, to make a fire and be punctual. To remove their hats upon enter ing a house. To hang up their hats, and res pect their teacher. To keep their finger nails from wearing mourning. To hold their heads erect and button their mother’s boots. To be as kind and helpful to 'their sisters as to other boys’ sis ters. To take pride in having their mothers and sisters for their best friends. To close the door very quietly, especially when there is a sick per son iD the house. To treat their mother as politely as if she were a strange lady who did not spend her life in their ser vice. - If they do anything, to take their mother into their confidence, and above all, never to lie about any thing they have done. .When their play is over for the day to wash.their face and hands, brush their hair and spend the evening in the house. Not to take the easiest chair in the room" and place it directly in front of the fire, and forget to offer it to their mother when she comes to sit down. To make qp their minds not to learn to smoke or chew, remember ing that these things are not easi ly unlearned, and that they are ter rible drawbacks to good men. Not to grumble and refuse when asked to do some errand which must be done, and which would otherwise take the time of some person who has more to do than themselves. Mistakes. It is a grave mistake to try to la bor when you arq not in a fit con dition to do so. um has exeeedecUits production byi pictures, and who are willing to from 20,000 to 30,000 barrels a! P a y for them in- advance, is that day. There has been available an j patron in many cases wants to enormous surplus, the accnmula-’ dictate the picture and use the ar- tion of the excess of the oil prod- simply as amenuesis. The net in past years, but cannot last long at the present disproportion of consumption and supply. The reduction of net stocks by all pipe lines has been going on during the past year at the rate of 650,000 bar rels a month. Without a stored surplus the oil wells of Pennsyl vania could not now meet the de mands upon them. The prospect grows worse, for the present year has shown so far an average daily production smaller than that of last year. The oil men are alive to the situation and are searching diligently for new sources of fsup- ply. The prices of landsjSwhich give any sort of 7 promise of oil have advanced rapidly. The fact that last year 5,700 wells were bored against only 1,700 in 1888, proves how actively the effort to brace up the present supply is be ing prosecuted. The announce ment that oil has been found New York is, therefore, bound to attract much attention. and to cause a thorough investigation of the region around Johnstown. The eecline of the shipment of oil from the United States to Great Britain during the four years preceeding 1889 was remarkable, and it has been accompanied by large Eng lish importations of Russian pe troleum." In 1885 Great Rritain imported 1,367,720 barrels of oil from the United States, and only 70,140 barrels from Russia. In 1888 oil imports from the United States.to Great Britain had fallen to 1,286,148 barrels, while the im ports from Russia had increased to 549,126 barrels. It is probable that the figures of last year will show a still greater decrease in English imports of American oil, and an increase in the imports from Russia. The control of the petroleum trade which the United States has'held so long.is serious ly threatened. A new kind of shoe is being tried in the ^German army. The sole consists of a sort of wire ..trel lis, while the spaces between are filled up with gutta percha and resin. This new preparation is said to be cheaper, more durable and more elastic than leather. well-known landscape painter, Thomas Moran, once undertook to paint a picture and listen to the ideas of the man who was to own the picture after it was painted. He agreed that the customer should furnish the idea, and he was to do the mechanieal part of the work at so much an hour, and he made what seemed to him a very profita ble bargain. The painting was in progress for a whole year, and at thejend of that time the bill for services was a magnificent affair, running up to over $1,000. The picture was not nearly'so magnifi cent as the bill. The customer was fain to'confess that Mr. Mo ran had carried out all his sug gestions, and when he dwelt on this fact he was rather inclined to accept the result and grow enthu siastic over it. But he was thoroughly dissatisfied; when he asked the artist to put his name to the picture and the artist refused, After that experience he decided to let the artist whom he dealt with furnish not only the brush and the skillful handling of it, but the ideas which prompted the brush’s movements. Educate'(he Hands aud Head. The value of two things which nothing but death can take away from a man or woman—that which he puts into his brain, knowledge } and into his hands, skill—was never more apparent than in the present age. But, to be of value, in this age of push, they must go together. One without the other leaves the possessor not exactly helpless, but always in search of the person who possesses that oth er, in order that his own little fad may be made of value. The idea in education now seems to be, and it is correct, that it should be push ed to a certain extent, and then the practical use must be insisted upon.—Richmond Item. for THE BLOOD, Weakness, Malaria, Indigestion, and Biliousness, take __ BROWN’S IRON BITTERS.
