The recent discoveries of crude

doubts are entertained as to the
future of the oil supply in this

To take pride in having their

If they do anything, to take their
mother into their confidence, and
above all, never to lie about any
thing they have done.

net in past years, but cannot last
long at the present disproportion
of consumption and supply. The
reduction of net stocks by all pipe
lines has been going on during the
past year at the rate of 650,000 bar
rels a month. Without a stored
surplus the oil wells of Pennsyl
vania could not now meet the de
mands upon them. The prospect
grows worse, for the present year
has shown so far an average daily
production smaller than that of
last year. The oil men are alive
to the situation and are searching
diligently for new sources of fsup-
ply. The prices of landsjSwhich
give any sort of 7 promise of oil
have advanced rapidly. The fact
that last year 5,700 wells were
bored against only 1,700 in 1888,
proves how actively the effort to
brace up the present supply is be
ing prosecuted. The announce

New York is, therefore, bound to
attract much attention. and to
cause a thorough investigation of
the region around Johnstown. The
eecline of the shipment of oil from
the United States to Great Britain
during the four years preceeding
1889 was remarkable, and it has
been accompanied by large Eng
lish importations of Russian pe
troleum." In 1885 Great Rritain
imported 1,367,720 barrels of oil
from the United States, and only
70,140 barrels from Russia. In
1888 oil imports from the United
States.to Great Britain had fallen
to 1,286,148 barrels, while the im
ports from Russia had increased to
549,126 barrels. It is probable
that the figures of last year will
show a still greater decrease in
English imports of American oil,
and an increase in the imports
from Russia. The control of the
petroleum trade which the United
States has'held so long.is serious
ly threatened.

well-known landscape painter,
Thomas Moran, once undertook to
paint a picture and listen to the
ideas of the man who was to own
the picture after it was painted.
He agreed that the customer should
furnish the idea, and he was to do
the mechanieal part of the work at
so much an hour, and he made
what seemed to him a very profita
ble bargain. The painting was in
progress for a whole year, and at
thejend of that time the bill for
services was a magnificent affair,
running up to over $1,000. The
picture was not nearly'so magnifi
cent as the bill. The customer
was fain to'confess that Mr. Mo
ran had carried out all his sug
gestions, and when he dwelt on
this fact he was rather inclined to
accept the result and grow enthu
siastic over it. But he was
thoroughly dissatisfied; when he
asked the artist to put his name to
the picture and the artist refused,
After that experience he decided
to let the artist whom he dealt
with furnish not only the brush
and the skillful handling of it, but
the ideas which prompted the
brush’s movements.

Educate'(he Hands aud Head.
The value of two things which
nothing but death can take away
from a man or woman—that which
he puts into his brain, knowledge }
and into his hands, skill—was
never more apparent than in the
present age. But, to be of value,
in this age of push, they must go
together. One without the other
leaves the possessor not exactly
helpless, but always in search of
the person who possesses that oth
er, in order that his own little fad
may be made of value. The idea
in education now seems to be, and
it is correct, that it should be push
ed to a certain extent, and then
the practical use must be insisted
upon.—Richmond Item.

Hon. James M. Smith, of Ogle

“My whole ambition is'centered in

thing I should do would be to
stick a torch to every building on
my place, and turn my fields out.
It would be money in my pocket,
