Intelligent industry is the ral ing force in successful agricul ture. Permit no smoking about the barn, haystacks, or strawstacks. The best cure for a fence break ing animal is administered by the butcher. There is no profit in rearing or keeping cattle, except in good feed ing in all seasons of the year. Good roads mean thrift, liber ality and wealth. They mean good farms'and good real estate val ues. Fashion Notes. Dyed parrots are used on small lints. . Light, fleecy furs are used for trimming house dresses. Shepherds checks of one color with lines or black, white or red, come in soft twilled woolens for children’s drosses. Pompadour ribbons of various widths are stitched on evening dresses in rows from the neck to the hem of the toilet. Straight sashes, of three inch padded silk, and angel sleeves of gauze are characteristics of a very novel house or party dress. Friuging of monkey fur is a very cosy looking finish fora walking jacket. It is also seen on princess dresses of black silk and cloth. Bill Sye-- The newspaper puff is some thing that makes men feel bad if they don’t get. The groundwork of an ordinary newspaper puff con sists of a moral character and a good bank account Writing news paper puffs is like mixing sherry cobblers and mint juleps all through the summer months for customers and quenching your own thirst with rainwater. Sometimes a man Is looking for a puff and don’t get it, then he says the pa per is going down hill, and that it is in the hands of a monopoly, and he would stop subscribing if he did not have to pay his bill first. Writing a newspaper puff is like taking the photograph of a homely baby. If the photograph does not represent the child with wings and hales and harps, it shows that the artist does not understand his bus iness. So it is with the newspaper puff—if the puff doesn’t stand out like a bold and fearless exponent of truth and morality, it shows that the puffer doesn’t understand human nature. It is more fun to see a man read a puff of himself than to see a man slip on an orange peel. The nar rowminded man reads it over sev en or eight; times, and then goes around to the different places where the paper is taken and steals what he can. The kind hearted family man goes home and reads it to his wife, and then pays up his bill on the paper. The successful busi ness man who advertises and makes money, .starts immediately to find the newspaper man and speaks a word of grateful acknowl edgement and encouragement. Then tffe two men start out of the sanctum and walk thoughtfully down the street together, and the successful business man takes su gar in his, they both eat a clove or two; and life is sweeter, and peace settles down like a turtle dove our hearts, and after a while lamp posts get more plentiful and every body seems more or less intoxi cated, but the hearts of these two men are filled with a nameless joy, because they know just where to stop and not-make themselves ri diculous. - . „ Some -Startling Disclosures, Augusta Chronicle. Hi: St:"- Bishop Tnrner, (colored) Georgia, has written an open letter to Fred Douglass, in which he says race prejudice is growing stronger, and adds: “For this I am not denouncing the south any more than the north, for the decision of a northern supreme court is the author of it all. I find a white man is a white man and a black man is a black man, be he north erner or southerner, and the great question that confronts us is, What will the black man do?” The bishop thinks the colored people should, as far as possible, be colo nized in Africa. He approves of Senator Butler’s scheme. A curious fall was that at Mis souri City. A team, a wagon and a driver were precipitated into a cut eighty feet deep on the Wa bash road. The wagon was smash ed into-match timber, the horses K wero not seriously hurt, and the driver escaped by jumping. The last estimate for pensions is $157,000,000 for one year. at all, and only one in fifty has any baby. Now, the same men took a tour through Cherry Hill, a settlement “glowing with poverty.” Three hundred families were visited and 670 children were found under 10 years old, while 111 babies under 1 year are reported, Cherry Hill has been over eight een times as prolific as Fifth ave nue the past year. And yet Fifth Avenue has the wealth and the leisure to rear the future citizens of the republic as they should be reared, while Cherry Hill struggles in poverty. Is wealth an enemy of childhood? Is fashion the foe of posterity? Here is'the text of many a ser mon, says the World. Compared with Fifth Avenui and Peachtree street, Green street, the fashionable thoroughfare in Augusta, makes a good showing. There are half a dozen babies every block—and the year is yet young, There are four members of the United States Senate who can nev er be candidates for the Presiden cy of this republic under the con stitution, because of alien birth, Senator Jones, of Nevada, was born in England,. General McMil lan, of Michigan, in Canada, Sen ator Beck, of Kentucky, in Scot land, and Senator Pasco, of Flori da, in England. While it is the exception rather than otherwise that a Senator was born in the State he represents, sectional, lines have been closely observed. Of the northern Senators only two were born in the South—Culloin, of Hlinois, and Senator Hawley, of Connecticut, in North Carolina, Not one southern Senator is of northern origin. Dr. Bull’s Worm Destroyer is wonderfully efficacious. I pre scribed it in several instances and it never failed in a single case to have the desired effect. I know of no other worm remedy so certain and speedy in its effect.—J. P. Clement, M. D., Villanow, Ga. Farmers are learning not only how to make two bladss of grass grow where one grew before, but how to make ten bushels of corn aad ten bushels of wheat grow where one grew before. And they haye learned how to kill grass and weeds in their crops much faster than formerly. It’s curious how much more apt a girl’s hair is to fall down when is is all her own. A Peculiar Case. The transition from long, linge: ing and-painful sickness to robust health marks an epoch in the life of the individual. Such a remark able event is treasured in the memory and the agency whereby the good health has been attained is gratefully blessed. Hence it is that so much is heard in praise of Electric Bitters. So many feel they owe their restoration to health of the use of the Great Alterative and Tonic. Edmunds, of Elber- ton, Ga., writes: “A very peculiar and strange case of blood poison came under my attention a short time ago. A gentleman came here from Athens, Ga., where he had been bitten on the hand by a vi cious mule that he was breaking to work. The hand was in a horrible condition, and the inflammation was rapidly extending throughout his entire system. Every knuckle on his hand was an ulcer that was deep and sloughing. He stated to me that he had consulted several physicians, and taken their medi- cihes without deriving any benefit. I gave him a course of Swift’s Specific (S. S. S.), and in a few days he reported to me a marked improvement, and in one week from the time he commenced tak ing S. S. S. the hand was healed up and the poison entirely eradi cated from his system. It is my opinion that he would have lost life had it not been for the health giving properties contained in Swift’s Specific. He frankly ad mits himself that S. S.
