A Big Plan For Georgia Farmers.
Manufacturers’ Record.
The more the plan of the great
slock company incorporated in Lon
don, England, last September to
■operate in Georgia is studied, the
greater appear the possibilities for
$ood to Georgia if the plan is car
idled out successfully. It is under
stood that this success does not de-
pend upon a single share being
placed in Georgia, but principally
upon the hearty co-operation of the
formers of that state. Broadly
sketched; the object of the organiza
tion, the British & Southern States
Oattle Abbatoir & Produce Oo., Ltd.
ore to carry on the business of land
owners, cattle farmers, breeders and
■exporters to the United Kingdom
a»nd elsewhere of cattle, live-stock,
poultry, eggs, cheeBe, butter, fruit
and vegetables, either fresh or can
ned, and other natural produce, and
to engage in such undertakings in
■connection with that business as
may be necessary. These will in
clude the erection of slaughter-
1 ileuses, cold-storage plants, canner
ies, warehouses, factories, stables
■and other buildings required for
•slaughtering, tanr.iug, preserving
meat, manufacture of meat extracts
■and the handling economically of
by products.
The representatives in this coun
try of the company are Dr. John A.
Harries, and Ool. H. J. Lamar of
Macon, Ga. Ool. Lamar writes to
the Manufacturers’ Record that the
<5ompany’s success will depend upon
the farmers, fruit-growers and cat
tie-raisers of Georgia,- and that their
vital interest in its suocess is indica
ted by his elaboration of the plans
of his company, it proposes to lo
cate in different sections of the state
■collecting or concentrating stations,
where the farmers, fruit-growers,
gardeners, cattle-raisers, etc., may
bring their products in suoh quanti
ties as they see fit and receive at
onoe therefor the cash value of same,
In this way will be made a ready
and olose-by hiarket for all such
things.
The company will run a separate
and distinot line of steamboats from
Savannah and Brunswick to Liver
pool, Southampton and other ports.
On their, return trip these boats will
bring to the south Atlantio states a
Huporior class of immigrants, and
many men with money to invest in
lands and who will engage in vari
ous enterprises. This will not only
create an increased demand for
lands, and therefore an enhanced
value, but will aid in solving the la
bor question for farmers, eventuully
solving the negro problem.
The company will also bring into
Georgia, and other adjoining states,
’ a superior breed of cattle, as the
Devon, Herefords, etc., Berkshire
and Poland China hogs, Southdown
and -other fine sheep, which will be
used by the farmers in breeding
much superior grades of animals
than are now raised.
Expert gardeners, fruit and, grape
growers will be brought over and
employed by the company, and in
giving object lessons in conducting
such enterprises to the best advan
tage. This is proposed to be done
at all the company’s collecting sta
tions, and will bo of vast benefit to
the people, in that it will in effect
give them small experiment stations
ail-over the state'without cost to the
state.
The company intends to introduce
in the United Kingdom and else
where the Georgia cane syrup, made
in fbe proper manner and neatly
■canned, as it believes it will pieet
• with a ready sale across the waters
and briug to the Georgia farmers
thousands of dollars more than they
now receive.
The company will also endeavor
to introduce the yam potato abroad
as well as many other things which
the south produces, and for which
there is not a market, but for which
there should be a market.

The Man Who Is Ready.
Selected.
Every great victory is the result
of years of preparation. It is not
given to any man to achieve suc
cess in life without this prepara
tion. Every success in life is the
expression of a man’s ability to
recognize and lay hold of opportu
nity. And no man can do this
without preparation. The man
who expects to achieve victories
“off hand,” never achieves them.
No great book was ever written,
no great sermon was ever preach
ed,no great picture was ever paint
ed “off hand.” They are all the
results of the cumulative power of
work and growth and develop
ment. The man who writes the
great sermon began to master all
the details of it during his first
years at college. The man who
wrote tho great book began to
adapt himself to the work of writ
ing it years before a line of it was
ever penned. And only the artist
who paints a great picture, knows
of the years of patient, wearisome
preparation back of the finished
work,
Charles Kingsley says of Turner
the great painter, that he spent
hours and hours in the mere con
templation of nature without us
ing brush or pencil. An authen
tic story is told of how Turner
was once known to have spent a
whole day sitting upon a rock
throwing pebbles into a lake
When evening came his brother
painters Bhowed him their sketch
es andjrallied him upon • having
done nothing. He said, “I have
learned how a lake looks when
pebbles are thrown into it.”
None of his fellow students
could ever paint the ripples as
Turner painted them.
Many men and women find to
their sorrow and dismay that
when the opportunity of a lifetime
is presented, to them they are ut
terly unable to graBp it because of
lack of preparation. They are
not ready for the hour of opportu
nity when it comes. They have
not that koen discernment, that
mastery of details, that ripened
judgment, which only preparation
can give.
When a great man achieves a
great triumph iu art or literature,
or even in business or war, it is
often said of him that he is a ge
nius. 80 he is. He has the sort
of genius Carlyle had in mind
when he wrote that “genius is an
immense capacity for taking
trouble.” Genius and work go
hand in hand.
The man who is ready when the
hour of opportunity comes, and
who sees that opportunity and us
es it, lias bo trained his powers as
to compel them to obey his will.
His self-reliance is based on good
judgment and not on vaunting
egotism. The man who is ready
is the man who has a profound
sense of the responsibilities and
possibilities of life. He sets no
limit to his own development and
yet his ambition does not exceed
Ms powers of achievement.
The man who is ready is the
man whose life takes on its ap
pointed honor and glory.
When a horse picks up a nail in
his foot what does the driver do?
Does he whip the limping, lagging
animal and force him along? Not
unless he wants to ruin the horse.
At the first sign of lameness he
jumps down, examines the foot,
and carefully removes the cause of
the lameness. What is called
‘weak Btomach” is like the lame
ness of the horse, only to be cured
by removing the cause of the
trouble. If you stimulate the
stomach with “whisky medicines”
you keep it going, but every day
the condition is growing worse. A
few doses sometimes of Dr.
Pierce’s Golden Medical Discovery
will put the disordered stomach
and its allied organs of digestion
and nutrition in perfect condi
tion. Ninety-eight times in every
hundred “Golden Medical Discov
ery” will cure the worst ailments
originating in diseases of the
stomach. It always helps. It al
most always cures. To cure con r
stipatiou use Dr. Pierce’s Pleas
ant Pellets. They’re sure.
