The very short, broad hand, wth
short, thick fingers and a heavy
thumb which bears a top joint just
like a small ball, betrays a criminal
tendency. The man who forges
• counterfeit money or notes has a
nicer hand. It has long, thin fingers.
'The sneak-thief has a hand that is
’■broad, with slim fingers or else very
knotted ones. Always the thumb is
•ouriously supple and bends back
away from the hand at an acute
angle, according to a writer in Tit-
Bits magazine. The surgeon has a
long hand with long, slender, but
nicely-shaped fingers. The artist has
a short, broad hand, the outer edge
of which, from the little finger to
the wrist, shows a definite outward
curving.

FAMOUSCHARACIEK (
(Continued from Front Page) i
North country, the late Jack
London wrote the story off
Burning Daylight with Cap-,
tain Jack Lloyd as its hero. j
When the “little bits of
glass” were found on the j i
veldts of the Kimberly, Lloyd j
vas one of the first Americans!
hat made the trek to the Afri ,
an country, and he tells you 1
that was really a good boom.;
When he was 18 years of I
age he joined the famous Tex
as Rangers for the first time, j
and he tells you that was back!
in the days that a man had to'
be a man to join the famous
Texas organization.
Marshal officers and Rang
ers headquarters from border
to border, when they wanted
a “bad character run down,
used to send for “Daylight”
I for as the saying went, “Day
light usually brought his man
in.”
Wars! Fighting! Well listen
to this. In the World War he
was with the British Intellig
ence department, served in a
Scotland Yard Unit, got plug
ged and gassed, as he tells it,
and had to “check out.” In
the Spanish American affair,
he rushed down to San Anton
io to join the famous Teddy
Roosevelt and his Rough Rid
ers. In the Boer war, he was
with the great Lord Roberts
at the battle of Ladysmith, and
then tells you that for several
weeks before the end of the
war he was with the Legion of
death in the Russian Army, a
sort of a soldier of fortune,
outfit when Russia was fight-J
ing the Japs.
For more than 3 years he
rode with Pancho Villa down
in Mexico and tells us that
Pancho was a real fellow, al
ways trying to do something
for the little people.
In Nicarauga, he was with
Sandino for several months,
they called it th e “Banana”
revolution he tells us, but it
was a terrible affair, one of
the worst Latin American
fights he was ever in. Over in
Cuba he fought with the Ma
chado outfit and manned the
machine guns from the roof of
the National theatre. Then he
adds that he has taken a part
in so many other affairs below
the Rio Grande that he can
not quite remember them all
at one time.
Like all good soldiers of for
tune, he did his “hitch” in the
French F o r e i gn Legio n and
tells us that the half has nev
er been told regarding the Le
gion, and when a man faces
the “white hot sand” Blood
thirsty Arabs and the rest of
the routine of the Legion . . .
well he can face any other mu
sic in the world.
Regarding the war clouds of
the day, he tells us this: No
two great powers will start
this war. It will be started by
smaller countries, then the
world. He adds, just to think
that Russia and the United
(States, controlling the greatest
majority of the natural resour
ces of the world, could avert
this coming war by refusing to
sell to Germany, Italy or Ja
pan, any commodity that can
be used in making munitions
of war. Russia controls more
than 76 per cent of the oil of
the world, Mexico 20 per cent.
He asks, “Why permit Mexico
to sell this confiscated oil to
the countries that are storing
it up to fight us with?” He
tells us again that the next
army that marches into Mexi
co will see following it a pa
trol of the Nations of the West
ern hemisphere for European
and Asiatic capital is invested
in the United States in millions
and millions of dollars. “Why
should not American money
and investments be protected i
and Americanism be respect-1
ed?” he concludes. |
This is the first time that
| the veteran has ever stopped
in Perry and he says that it
is a very friendly, wide-awake
little town.

quick-acting nitrogen helps every crop you grow. More
than that—its natural blend of protective elements—boron,
iodine, potash, manganese, calcium, magnesium and others
helps offset any lack of these elements in your soil.
Whenever, wherever you use nitrate be sure it is Natural
