A Strange Market

Gothic Architecture
Gothic architecture, briefly de
fined, is that in w'hich structures
are built with ribs that intersect
and in which thrusts are slopped by
buttresses. Whereas Romanesque
depended on thick walls, Gothic
went to the other extreme, with
walls that were mere shells, and
with an active skeleton or bone
structure of stone, consisting of
piers, arches, and buttresses. The
common buttress and the flying
buttress, the last named were typ
ical of Gothic architecture, as was
the pointed arch.
First Consolidated Schools
The first state to pass an act per
mitting the consolidation of schools
was New York (Union School law
of 1853, amended and incorporated
as title IX of the Consolidated
School act of 1864). In 1874 the
law was put into operation for the
first time by the town of Quincy,
but it was not until 1890 that the
movement gained much headway.

If all the lumber cut in the United
States for about the last 135 years
were in a single solid pile it would
make a cube almost exactly one
mile in each direction. As much
lumber has been cut in the past 35
years as in the preceding 100 years.

Cost of Auto Travel
A travel bureau’s experiments re
cently disclosed the cost of a 1,000-
mile automobile journey averages
about two and one-fifth cents a mile
if the speed is kept below 45 miles
an hour. At 55 miles an hour the
cost jumps to three and three-tenths
cents. The figures were based on
I gas, oil, tire and maintenance costs.
Poor Safety Warning
Trying to avoid a boy standing
at the side of a road in Louisville,
Ky., the driver of an automobile
jerked the wheel. The car over
turned and the two occupants went
to a hospital. Police explained the
“boy” was a life-size statue intend
ed as a safety warning.

right. At his left is the chair of the

Meaning of Name Winthrop
Winthrop, of Teutonic origin and
later Anglo-Saxon, is a residence
name meaning “from the friendly
village” or "friendly villager.” Orig
inally a surname, it is now popular
as a first name. The original form
was Winthorp, thorp being the An
glo Saxon word for hamlet or small
village.
Oldest Form of Gambling
The Encyclopedia of Sports says
that the oldest form of gambling is
with dice, which were known to
earliest civilization. Recently there
was dug out of ancient Mesopotamia
a pair of dice at least 50 centuries
old, still in good enough state of
preservation to be used for gam
bling today. Most of the tombs along
the ancient Nile have produced dice,
some accompanied by cups and
boards.
Village of 750 Steps
The "Lost Tribe” of Chimney
Rock lives on top of a precipitous
mountain in Rutherford county,
North Carolina. One way out leads
over a tortuous eight-mile lumber
trail, impassable in severe weather.,
Usually the villagers prefer to come
down 750 steps which climb the face
of Chimney Rock, shopping at the
village beneath, and then ascending
the cliff again to their homes.
Harpoon Returned
A Formosa fisherman who lost his
harpoon recently when it broke off
in a 300-pound swordfish, was sur
prised to learn that George Engel
found it while dressing the fish in
his market at New Britain, Conn.
The harpoon had sunk deeply into
the flesh and was covered over when
the wound healed.
Statue Has Wardrobe
Probably the most famous statue
in Brussels, Belgium, is the Manne
ken-Pis. He is a little naked boy
who is anything but self-conscious,
and he has a large wardrobe of cos
tumes and uniforms humorously
contributed by various societies
and even by foreign governments.
Modern ‘Eli Whitney’
The late Dr. Charles H. Herty of
Savannah, Ga., a research chemist
specializing in wood pulp products,
is credited by some with bringing
more wealth to the South than anj
man since Eli Whitney invented the
cotton gin.
