A free-flowing mixture of nitrogen and potash distributes satisfac
torily and is being widely used as a side-dressing.
Advance sales of potash indicate
that thousands of farmers through
out the South will supplement the
fertilizer applied at planting this
year with a combination of nitro
gen and potash as a side-dressing.
Thit is regarded aa very essential
because many of the mixtures used
at planting were low in both nitro
gen and potash, and a well
balanced supply of plant food is
necessary in order to secure the
proper growth and enable plants to
resist disease.
The results to be obtained from
aide-dressing cotton with nitrogen
jxilash top-dressers are determined
to a large extent by the time of
application, tests at a number of
•experiment stations in the southern
states show. Experiments conduct
ed ever a long period of years in
dicate that the side applications
should be made to cotton about 35
days after planting in order to get [
the greatest returns. Many farm
ers follow the practice of making
the supplementary application im
mediately after chopping with
satisfactory results. However, if
delayed much later, full results are
not obtained from the additional
plant food.
Side-dressing corn 40 days after
planting has given best results with
this crop, experiments show. The
common practice of making the
application when the plants are
“knee high” is not recommended
because height is not an accurate
indication of the time the crop
needs fertilizing.
Authorities recommend the use of
50 to 100 pounds of muriate of po
tash or 100 to 200 pounds per acre
of a 10-0-10 analysis for the side
application. With a limitation on
acreage, it is highly important that
this additional application be made
in order to produce a normal
growth of disease-free plants which
will in turn yield a profitable
harvest.
