Mosquito Bit*
How does a mosquito bite? First
he lights on the victim, places his>
mouth, which is a hollow tube about
three-eighths of an inch long, on the
skin. The stinger, a raspy drill
partly covering the outside of the
mouth, sinks swiftly, penetrating the i
skin. The mosquito starts his feast j
of blood. The irritation of a bite j
is caused by the moseftuto’s saliva, 1
deposited in the wound to prevent 1
the blood clotting in the insect’s |

ALLOW LEGUMES TO
MAKE GOOD GROWTH
In view of the approaching
time to turn under cover crops,
County Extension Agent W. T.
Middlebrooks this week suggest
ed that farmers give considera
tion to the amount of growth be
ing added to the soil and also
jto the crops that follow winter
legumes.
“Cover crops should be allow
ed to make growth sufficient to
give maximum soil improvement,
yet offer as little hindrance as
possible to the crops that are
planted after them,” the agent
explained.
“On the average, 6,000 to 10,-
000 pounds of green weight per
acre can be gotten in time to
prepare the land for summer
crops,” he continued. “This
growth contains nitrogen equiva
nt to 300 to 500 pounds of ni
ate of soda and organic matter
,ual to around two to four tons
manure. These amounts will
d greatly to the fertility of the
soil and to the yield of crops.
“Later turning can be prac
ticed for such crops as cowpeas,
soybeans, or other later-planted
crops, than for corn or cotton.
However, in any case, the winter
legume crops should be turned
under in time to decay thorough
ly before other crops are planted,
this is usually 10 to 20 days af
ter the winter legumes have
been turned under.”
Another good rule, according
to Mr. Middlebrooks, is to turn
winter legumes at the stage when
they can be thoroughly covered
Iby the implements available on
j the farm. A thorough discing
! before plowing will help greatly
jin getting the cover crop incor
! porated in the soil. A farmer
I with a one-horse turning plow
| will have difficulty covering a
16,000 pound growth, while a fel
| low with a two-horse plow can
! easily handle growths of 8,000 to
10,000 pounds per acre, and even
[ larger growths, if tractors are
available, he added. Have coun
ty AAA office check fields before
turning to secure credit on 20%
requirement and soil building
practice payments.
The county agent, in summing
up suggestions for turning under
crons, said let the crop make
sufficient growth to do the soil
some good and when the crop is
turned under, cover the vines
completely and allow sufficient
time to elapse between turning
and planting for the legume crop
to decay thoroughly. With good
stands, growths of 6 to 10 inches
high will usually give sufficient
amounts for turning.
Late turning, incomplete cov
ering, and too early planting of
summer crops after turning of I
winter legumes are the greatest
causes of worm damage and poor
stands, the Extension agent
stated.

THi LAMP™ THE
VALLEY
A NOVEL OF ALASKA BY ARTHUR STRINGER
Arthur Stringer went up to Alaska to see for himself
the “red plush pioneers'’ of the federal colony in the
Matanuska valley. He got an eyeful. He put what he
saw into this vivid novel, which deals with Sidney
Lander, a mining engineer, and the three women who
loved him. There are complications aplenty, with
Sockeye Schlupp, the picturesque old-timer, thrown
in for good measure.
Here’s a story that will keep you burning the
midnight oil.
