WESLEYAN ALUMNAE
SEEK TO AID CHINA:
By MARTHA COOPER
The China Emergency Relief I
Committee under the leadership (
of the novelist Pearl S. Buck is
striving to raise one million dol- i
lars for the medical supplies so
urgently needed in China today.
To do his part the artist Laazr
Raditz presented to the commit-!
tee a portrait he had painted of
Madame Chiang Kai-shek (Mei- 1
ling Soong). He gave this with
the understanding that the por
trait be sold and every dollar of
the price be used to buy anes
thetics, bandages, vaccine, and
serum so desperately needed to
day be the people of China. The
committee is asking fifteen hun
dred dollars for the portrait.
Madame Chiang Kai-shek is
recognized over the world today
as one of the outstanding leaders,
man or woman, of the modern
age. With her husband, the
Generalissimo of the Chinese Re
public, she is trying to modernize
ancient China. Together they
are striving to unite the huge
land of 450,000,000 people into a
democracy like our own. Through
four long, cruel years of war she
has kept her faith and her cour
age and stood by her soldier hus
band in his fight to keep their j
people from being conquered by
the Japanese. She herself had
charge of China’s air forces in j
the beginning of the war. Yeti
with her many and various duties I
she has found time to collect and |
try to provide lor the thousand.- |
of children left wandering alone I
after the Japanese airships had
destroyed the towns and killed
the parents.
A loyal Methodist herse 1 sht
has led her unbelieving husband
to Christ and into the church.
Truly she exemplifies all that a
modern woman should be.
In 1908 this world famous fig
ure was living in Macon,Georgia,
attending Wesleyan College, Nit
entered tne preparatory school
and was at Wesleyan trom 190 b
to 1913. She was then tne pret
ty mischievous Mei-ling Soi ng
youngest daughter <>t two loyal
Methodist converts in China.
Now the National Wesleyan
Alumnae Association wishes to
honor their outstanding alumna.
China’s First Lady, by placing
her portrait in the college for all
to see. At. the same lime with
this honor to her will be sent
cash gifts of mercy to the coura
geous and suffering people whose
beloved leader she is.
The Perry Wesleyan alumna
are collecting nickles, dimei m
more to help buy Madame Cu
ang’s partrait which will be bun,
here in central Georgia. Luc re
member that the same mone.>
will be sent across the oce m t
help those in greater need thai
we are.
$l.OO will keep a refugee 20
days. $l.OO will feed a conva
lescent child a month. $.lOO will
cure 1 person of malaria. $2.00
will mean that ‘BO persons may j
have chloroform for an operation
rather than suffering the agony
with no help,
$20.00 from Perry would mean
that a small Chinese child would
lie sheltered, clothed, fed, and
schooled for a whole year.
So if you have an extra dime
please give it so there will be a
little less suffering in the world.
Governor Talmadge has ap
proved a budget increasing old
age pensions $246,000 for the
present quarter over the quarter
just ended. The new figure is
$640,000 more than the pension
ers were allotted during the final
quarter of last year. Tne state’s
part of the appropriation for the
present quarter is $881,250, com
pared to $776,029 for the last
quarter, and $511,164 for the
corresponding quarter last year.
The national farm program
helps farmers keep their land
productive and their homes more
secure. ;
