The attractive red, white and blue window sticker, pictured above, is
,the new yardstick of patriotism in the War Bond drive throughout the
; nation. With the slogan, “Everybody every pay day, ten percent,’' sweep
’ ing the country, patriotic Americans on the home front are rallying to their
Government’s appeal for funds with which to help finance the war. The
.home which displays the “ten percent’’ sticker is doing its share toward
i Victo/y for America and the United Nations. Th« stickers are being dis
tributed through local War Savings Chairmen. v.S. Treasury Utpaiimtni
OR. R. L. CATER. A TRIBUTE
Courtesy, kindness, gentle
ness, patience, a keen mind,
skilled hands, careful judgment,
tireless energy, unselfish service;
these are some of the thoughts
that crowd the mind as one tries
to capture and transfer to paper
a simple tribute to the memory
of Dr. Robert Lee Cater, who
was given to this community for
more than seventy years of life.
The large gathering of friends
from far and near, attending his
recent funeral, the love that had
sought to express itself in flow
ers until the house was filled;
the innumerable messages ex
pressing sympathy and a real
sharing of this loss; genuine ap
preciation hid in countless hearts
shut away from these privileges;
all were trying to tell, though
inadequately, what Dr. Cater
meant to this community.
Call other witnesses! Let the
old people speak, the mothers of
large families, let the children
have a say, seek out the boys on
the baseball lots or more modern
“Gyms”; talk with the members
of the Perry Rifles military com
pany, or the newer Boy Scouts;
listen to men of different races or
color, rich or poor: all will con
sistently witness to the many
sidedness of this truly great man,
who delighted to identify him
self with all ages and callings,
caring particularly for the inter
ests of the youth of his town.
In him was the genuine love
for folks, and many times did his
office prove a sanctuary for the
sick-at-heart, as well as the sick
in-body. He had time for people,
for boys and girls, and let them
feel he was honored to share
their confidences. A warm wel
come seemed awaiting all who
came.
How true it is also that the
Cater home is a place where
friends love to gather. Fellowship
is real and vital, and conversa
tion ever on high levels. The
jovial Doctor had a good collec
tion of human interest stories)
gathered through the years of
the horse-and-buggy-days on
down to the present.
Dr. Cater was a devoted son of
the South, and loved her history,
her traditions, her literature.
Reading was his recreation, his 1 ,
hobby in modern terms. The!
writers and characters of classic!
literature were very real to him.
He never tired of reading great
books over and over. Those who
loved him best must share his
love for Dickens, and the won-
Iderful people that lived within
his books. When tired to ex
haustion, he could rest better af
ter reading some scene or bit of
action precious to him, from a
loved book.
Dr. Cater was born and reared
to manhood here in Perry, the
son of Mr. T. J, Cater and Mrs,
Amelia Wimberly Cater. He was
educated at Emory College, Ox
ford, but before going there he
spent some time at Kirkwood
Military Academy, Atlanta. It
was while in training there that
he won in a state competitive
drill a medal that he treasured
always.}
His medical work was taken at
Philadelphia, Jefferson Medical
College. It was years after
when some member of his family
found the record that at gradu
ation he had been offered a place
i there as Instructor.
A friend and fellow student
tried to interest him in Texas,
but it so happened that in going
to La Fayette, Alabama to visit
his sister, Mrs. Kitty Oliver,
who was in failing health,he was
led to make his beginning in
medical practice there, and lived
there for five years.
He married one of Perry’s
jmost beloved daughters, Miss
I Stella Duncan, in 1889 and in
11894 they returned to Perry to
make their home here.
In 1900 following the Spanish-
American war, there was in the
coastal states particularly an out
break of smallpox. Dr. Cater
led in a most conspicuous piece of
work in this county, investigat
ing cases, making special photo
graphic studies, securing the co
operation necessary for enforc
ing compulsory vaccination. This
work was so efficiently done that
it received state recognition.
In the last World War, Dr.
Cater offered for active service.
Not being called, he served as
County chairman of Red Cross,
and proved himself indispensa
ble here at home.
Who that lived through the
winter of 1918 can forget the
Influenza scourge? It was some
thing new, something awful
sweeping the earth and claiming
more victims than the battle
fronts. Dr. Cater in an almost
miraculous way was able to keep
his strength, and day after day (

to go and go, not sparing him
self, doctoring, nursing, feeding,
ministering in a hun
dred ways to the suffering peo
ple, frightened and not under
standing, spread over a large
area of the county. For days
and weeks it meant leaving des
perately ill ones in his own home.
Almost any doctor takes self
forgetful service in his day’s
work, but some experiences write
themselves on the heart never to
be forgotten. One such is a mem
ory of nights lengthening into
| weeks which this doctor spent
in the home of a desperately ill
and beloved patient.
Such service is Christ-like, and
bears fruit in unseen ways.
Where such love is, there is
God, and the Comrade-Christ
1 who came to earth not to be
j ministered unto, but to minister,
'and to give his life for many.
How poor are words to express
what has been so wonderfully
wrought in deeds. Are these
words of Studdert-Kennedy not
true of our friend?
“To give and give and give
! again,
What God has given thee;
To spend thyself, nor count the
cost,
To serve right gloriously.”
