CLOSE SHAVE
Smith was in his den with a few
of his friends talking about his wife
and her peculiarities.
“I have thought for some time,”
he said, ‘‘that my wife is utterly de
void of taste, but the other day she i
put on a new dress which was atro
cious beyond words. I daren’t, of
course, say a word about it, and
dared hardly look at it, but as she
went out I went to the window to
have another look at her and—”
At this juncture his wife entered
suddenly.
“And the funniest part of the
whole affair,” continued Smith,
without showing the least embar
rassment, ‘‘was that they found the
cat 11 days later on the top of
Eiffel Tower!”
And Mrs. Smith still does not
understand what there was in that
ridiculous statement to make them
all laugh so uproariously.
Yanks Ahead
Tommy—Back in England we
have some very large birds. Once
in the zoological gardens I saw a
man come in on an eagle.
Doughboy—Brother, that’s noth
ing. I’ve often seen a player in a 1
ball game go out on a fly.
Bound to Be Missed
Jones—l’m leaving all my prop
erty to my wife on condition that
she marries again within a year.
Smith—Why are you making your
will that way?
Jones—l want someone to be sor
ry I died.
CASH POSITION
Cashier—You’ve overdrawn your
account. You’re behind.
Wise Depositor—No, I’m ahead; !
you’re behind.
Skilled Labor
Foreman You hammer those
nails like lightning.
Tony—Yes, boss, you mean I got
plenty speed?
Foreman—No, you never strike
twice in the same place.
Completely Absent
Prof—Sorry I’m late, but I forgot
my watch this morning.
Visitor —Why didn’t you go back
and get it?
Prof—l would have but I didn’t
have the time.
i
The Woman of It
j Mabel—Well Jane, you certainly
stood by Bill through thick and thin.
Jane—Yes, I’ve been married ten
j years now and it’s always been thick
j stories and thin envelopes.
Practically Necessary
Sambo—lt sure was bad youall
had to bury youah wife.
Rastus—Yeh, but Ah didn’t know
what else Ah could done—she’d been
daid three days.
Relief Expedition
Jones You’re not going on a
pleasure trip with an A card?
Smith—Yes. I’m taking my moth
er-in-law back home.
No More Questions?
Harry—Does your wife do all her
own washing?
Larry—All except her back!
Make It Sharp
Mrs.— How’s business, Mister?
Scissors Grinder—Fine! I never
saw things so dull!
AS LONG AS IT’S HAIR
Sonny—Dad, your hair will be
gray if it keeps on.
father—l don’t care what color it
becomes as long as it keeps on.
Incurable
Sandy— Doctor, my wife says 1
always sleep with my mouth open
Is there anything I can do for it?
Doctor—l’m afraid not. The skir
of your face is so tight that when
you close your eyes your mouth
opens.
Rationed as Usual
Landlady—The coffee, I’m sorry tc
say, is exhausted.
Boarder—Yes, poor thing. I waf
expecting it. I’ve noticed it’s beer
very weak for some time.

XXLMOST as much a part of most Southern villages
as the Court House, itself, is the bulk storage plant
at the edge of town bearing the old familiar sign:
STANDARD OIL COMPANY, Wherever people con
gregate and work and live, there you will find the tanks,
the office and the yard of an Agent of this Company.
The Agent is a part of the community. He is neighbor,
friend and fellow-townsman. And to the community HE
is the Standard Oil Company.
He lives “on the ground.” His feet are on the ground.
And that may explain how it is that Standard Oil can
and does keep so close to the interests of every locality
it serves. Our aims and actions are deep-rooted m the
/ery soil of every Southern County.
0 The people of the South make the South. We are
proud to be one of them by reason of our sixty genial
years in their midst.
