SNOW TREASURES 1
Millions of snowflakes are flut

Hurrying, scurrying trimming'
the town.
I
Are you snow-blossoms from sky
gardens gray?
Beauty and brightness are
strewn on your way.
Fairylike tinsel for earth’s Christ
mas trees?
Glistening and graceful you'
transform with ease!
Downy soft feathers for Na
ture’s spare bed?
Coverlets warm and most rapid
ly spread!
Maybe you re white leaves from
Nature’s great book;
On your crystalline splendor,
wise men would look!
Little love-letters from God to
us here;
Bring to our homes and our
hearts Christmas cheer!

CHRISTMAS 1943
By
Ella Shackleford Hemingway
Fuller
Oh. wondrous Star of Bethlehem!
We seek thy guiding light
Amid the crash of falling bombs
That bring death in the night.
The Son of God, whose birth you
showed
To wise men long ago,
Must wonder why His Birthday
brings
Instead of Joy, such Woe.
The Angels sang of Peace on
Earth.
Yet Peace is far removed
From Hearts and Homes of men
today—
The ones Whom Jesus loved.
But Peace will surely come again
If we will follow Him
Who lived, and died, that we
might live.
Shine, Star of Bethlehem!
SAVE SMALL TREES
Houston county farmers need
to conserve many small trees that
are now being cut for sawlogs
and let them grow a few more
years so they will make more
lumber, County Agent W. T.
Middlebrooks, for the Georgia
Agricultural Extension Service
pointed out this week.
Mr. Middlebrooks de c 1 a r e d
that, “It takes just about as
much time to cut and haul a
small tree as it does a larger one
that will yield a great deal more
lumber.
“For example, a pine tree 10
inches in diameter 4 % feet from
the ground will yield only about
25 board feet while a 12-inch
tree will give about 54 board
feet. A 14-inch tree contains
about IUO board feet and a 16-
inch one will cut about 165 board
feet of lumber.”
The county agent said that on
a farm woodland he recently
cruised ld2 trees were between
10 and 18 inches in diameter and
they would make 8,000 board
feet of lumber, while 128 trees
more then 18 inches would make
about 112,000 board feet.
“We-need to conserve small
trees and let them grow into
• larger trees where we get most
of our lumber,” Mr. Middle
brooks asserted. “Small trees
left will put on faster growth
and make big trees in a shorter
time. When big mature trees
(Ure cut those left have more
room to grow.”
