enough soda to top dress his grain, fruit and for
age; enough to side dress his corn, vegetables
potatoes, cotton and other vital crops.
Properly applied, 1 ton of soda top or side
dressing will produce 250 bu. of oats, 100
bu. of wheat, or 125 bu. of corn; 12,000
lbs. of vegetables, 9,600 lbs. of forage, or
1,250 lbs. of cotton and 2,250 lbs. of cotton
seed.
Last year 1,000,000 tons of Chilean Nitrate of Soda
were used on U. S. farms. This year every pound
that can be brought from Chile will be needed
and every pound possible will be brought in
time for your ’44 crops.

Brown Stamps V, W, grid X
j (Hook 3) expire February 26.
Brown Y (l.iok 3) valid
' Feb. 13 expires March 20,
Ked stamps A-8 through M-8;
(Book 4) (10 points each or a
total of 120 points) valid indefi
nitely to purchase pork from far
mers only. Not fr o m retail
stores.
Red BA. 88, C 8 (Book 4) valid
Feb. 27, at 10 poii ts each, for
use with tokens; ex.dr viay 20.
Processed boor s
Blue 8A through E8 (Book 4)
become valid Feb. 27, at 10
points each, for US' with tokens;
expire May 20.
Feb. I—Green1 —Green stamps K, Lj
and Min War R lion Book 4
valid thru vlch. 20.
Feb. 27 The new blue stamps,
to be used with ration tokens,
come into use. Between Febru
ary 27 when the blue stamps be
come valid and March 20 when
the old green stamps run out,
customers may use both sets of
stamps for a single purchase.
Tokens will be given in change
for both colors of stamps. Green
stamps will continue to have the
■>ame point valu« as at present
8,5, 2 and ] points; the new blue
stamps will have a uniform point
value of ten.
Since the green stamps expire
long before the blue, consumers
are advised to spend their green
stamps first. After March 20,
| processed foods will be bought
with blue stamps and blue tokens.
Tokens
Tokens will be gi v e n as
“change” for blue and green
and red and brown stamps only
when a purchase is made. No
more than nine tokens may be
given as “change” in one trans
action.
The tokens, which will have a
point value of one each, will be
made of a synthetic fiber, slight
ly smaller than a dime and will
be colored red and blue corres
ponding with the red and blue
stamps in Ration Book 4. Each
token will have a narrow border
of yellow.
They will be used by consum
ers as change for red and blu3
ration stamps, which even
though they are now numbered
8,5, 2, and 1, will later be given
a uniform value of ten points
each, according to OPA plans.
Here is how “token shopping”
will work: A consumer buying
rationed foods will tear from
Book 4 one or more red or blue
stamps depending upon the ra
tioned value of the purchase and
will receive change in tokens,
similar to way coins are used for
change of dollar bills.
Thus, if a housewife bought a
one pound can of peas valued at
16 blue points, she would give
the retailer two blue stamps
worth 10 points each (regardless
of their face value) and will re
ceive four ration tokens in
change. These four tokens
should then be treated as coins
and may be used at any time un
der the blue or red stamp pro
gram. Tokens will be valid in
definitely.
Consumers will not have to ap
ply to local boards for tokens as
they will be given in change by
local merchants.

jly write his license number and
i state on all gasoline coupons in
j his possession.

of shoes for indefinite period.
Stamp lon “airplane” sheet in

Shoes Go Military
Women’s shoe styles are going
j military. Most of the 40,000 shoes
on exhibit at the annual convention
3f the Middle Atlantic shoe retailers
n Philadelphia showed a distinct
military influence, and stylists say
the trend will be around for a while,
j H. C. Johnson, representative of Be
loit (Wis.) manufacturer, declared
that the predominance of tan col
ors with brass buckles and straps
would be in effect for the next thre« ;
years.

Live butts
and the woods don't mix
You don’t toss burning cigarettes around a powder plant.
But enough smokers toss burning cigarettes around forests to
start 20,000 forest fires a year, more than a quarter of the total.
In years of average fire loss, smokers cause a national loss of
more than $10,000,000 in our forests.
Few people realize how explosive a dry forest is in fire season
. . . how, in a twinkling, a lone spark may be fanned into a roaring
conflagration, destroying in a few hours what nature, aided by
man, has taken years to produce.
| A cigarette in a forest is a spark in a powder plant.
