A LETTER FROM HOME
(The f llowing poem was
printed on a leaflet and sent with '
a fruit cake to all local Methodist
and Baptist men in the service
by the Methodist W. S. C. S, and
he Baptist W. M. S. Mrs. G, C.
Nunn wrote the poem.)
Greetings Boys, here comes a
letter
Just some news from dear old
Perry,
From your home town Perry,
Georgia,
On the winding Dixie High
way,
Close beside the Ochlahatchee
Called by us the creek Big
Indian.
There you loved to play in sum
net
Leim d your sw mming, float
1, diving,
Learned to guide a boat and
paddle,
At the bend of old Biglndian--
At the old time-honored “wash
hole”
Loved by many a son and
father.
On the streets you boys playeo
marbles.
On the streets ’neath giam
shade trees;
And in vacant lots you labored
Clearing up your baseball
diamond,
Shouting, sweating, scrapping,
striving,
Learning lessons well worth
knowing.
lip the Main street stands the
school house
Where you studied, boned your
hardest (?)
Not alone to please your teacher,
But tq keep your ball team
surer
In the fight for score and victory.
For the glory of old Perry.
Here the drug stores where you’d
loiter,
Where the girls and boys
could visit,
L . ugh and chatter [roi nd th <
tables,
At the soda fountains tempt
ing,
Fat parched peanuts, cones and
candy,
Dn reshing Coca-Cola.
lust around the busy corner
Shines the brigntly lighted
movie,
Where vou loved to take your
girl-friend;
Loved to sit at ease all hidden
In the dark and restful shadows,
Little caring what the picture.
Down this tree-lined-street the
dearest
Sweetest home the town
afforded,
Was to you the place most
sacred.
How you loved its sheltering
kindness.
How your very soul was
nourished
In the comfort of its fireside,
In the love of friend and family.
Not forgotten are the churches
With their fingers pointing
upward,
And their bells so sweetly
calling,
There you joined in simpl
worship,
Learned to look to God for
guidance,
Listened, reverent, and scarce
knowing
Filled your soul with strength
for living.
All t mse places seem to miss
you,
Seem to miss your joyous
chatter,
And your friendly ringing
laughter;
And the very streets seem
lonely
Though tney’er walked by men
in khaki.
But we’re proud to know you’re
sharing
In the cross your country’s
bearing;
And your duty you’re fulfilling
Giving service glad and willing.
And we eagerly look forward
To the days when victory
cometh,
And our boys from earth’s far
corners
May return to home and
family,
1 To your loved ones proudly
waiting —
To your hometown, Per r
Georgia.
