Evidence that OPA can really
bear dawn on flaprant violators
of the hold-the-line program is
shown by figures just released by
1 the enforcement division of the
OPA in Atlanta. During 1944,
OPA collected $15,817,658 in
treble damage suits alone, over
eleven million dollars more than
the amount collected in 1943.
“These treble damage suits.”
an OPA spokesman explained,
■ “are strong points in our en
forcement program. In many
cases of overcharge, the buyer
may sue the seller for three!
times the amount of the over
charge, or for $5O. whichever is
greater. In cases involving used
cars, where underhanded prac
tices brought the hidden over
charges up into the three-figure!
brackets, buyers have sued for
and collected amounts of five
hundred dollars and more.”
All purchasers of any commo
dity covered by ceiling price reg
ulations, the spokesman added,
should check the legal prices on
every purchase, and if there is
jan overcharge, it should be called
to the seller’s attention immedi
ately. If the overcharge is not
corrected at once, the matter
should be reported to the War
Price and Rationing Board for
whatever action is best in that
particular case.
The recent increase in point
lvalues for margarine, lard,short
ening, salad and cooking oils was [
made necessary because of a
tight supply situation. Lard
production is considerably de
creased this year, due to a de
cline in slaughtering of hogs.
War uses are also taking a large
i percentage of 1945 lard produc-t
| tion.
I Since the civilian supply of
! j ar d is less than anticipated, the
| increase in point value was
necessary to assure fair distribu
tion. As shortening, salad and
cooking oils, and margarine may
jbe used interchangeably with
. lard, it was necessary to in
crease their point values at the
same time, OPA said.
Lard, shortening, salad and
cooking oils are now four red
points a pound, and margarine j
five points a pound.
