VITAMINS IN SNAP BEANS !

:on markets today. Scientists at
l the New York State Experiment
( Station recently made tests tO:
find out how cooking affects!

! scientists report that if frozen |
snap beans are cooked until ten- (
der in just enough water to pre
-1 vent scorching, they will furnish
j important amounts of three vita
imins—vitamin C and two of the
| B vitamins, thiamine and ribo
(flavin. They will cook more
, evenly and in a little shorter
time if allowed to thaw slightly
before going into the kettle. The
vitamin content is about the
same whether they go directly
into the kettle or thaw slightly
| first.
If the cooked beans have to

SAVE WASTE PAPER
Residents of Houston county
can supply enough waste paper
for 45,210 “suits of armor” for
105 mm. shells, if they will
buckle down and save an average
of 10 pounds of newspapers,
wrapping paper and boxes a
month. The 105’s are the big
lones that have been helping
j American forces in their ad
(vance toward Berlin and Tokyo.
Last year Americans saved
100 ‘-3 pounds of waste paper per
capita, or enough for about 35
containers each for the 105 mm.

For each ammunition container
or “paper suit of armor” used to
protect the shells from salt
water, dents, nicks and corro
sive dirt, approximately three
pounds of waste paper are re
quired. Ammunition container
board, one of the principal mate
rials used in making the “suits
of armor,” is made from mixed
paper and old corrugated boxes.
Another material used is called
“tube and can stock,” which is
'made from all types of waste
paper.
Boy Scouts of Perry are col
lecting waste paper every Friday
throughout the month of April.
Please have paper ready for the
boys when they call at your
home or place of business.

Hughes, district representative
of the War Food Administra
tion’s Office of Supply said this
week, in an urgent plea to house
wives to save their used kitchen
fats.
“Fats and oils supplies are
tighter than ever,” he asserted,
“with little or no immediate
chance of additional sources of
supply, other than fats salvaged 1
from the kitchens of American
homes,”
Mr. Hughes said the impor
tance of used kitchen fats in the
Nation’s war-time production
program could be gauged from
the fact that, “despite rapidly
dwindling meat supplies, OPA
is still offering two red points
per pound to housewives for their
used fats.”
