FEEDING THE LUTING FLOCK !
By Annie C. Newton, H. D. A. I
Under most Georgia conditions
it is advisable to select a mash,
| that is built to feed with scratch j
feeds, in order that we may take!
ladvantage of the scratch feeds!
produced locally or on the indi-,
vidual farms; however, there are
mashes built that are all-mashes
| that do not require scratch feeds.
These feeds are generally a little
more expensive. Some mashes
are built so complete until noth
ing is required in addition, not
even oyster shell or grit or green
feeds. These mashes generally
produce a very fancy egg, both
in flavor and in texture, but un
less there is a demand for a fan
cy egg. this system generally
does not pay except where the
flock owner is a small poultry
man and wishes to conserve
time: however, this system of
feeding still demands that birds
during the winter months be
forced to eat more than they nor
mally would by just keeping dry
mash before them. This can be
done by feeding pellets made
from the same feed at noon and
lat night, or dampening the
I mash so as to cause more con
sumption. If the usual proce
dure is followed and mash and
grain is fed, it is advisable to
keep the laying mash before the
hens at all times in quantities
that will allow them to clean up
the feed at least every two days.
Scratch feeds should be fed
late in the afternoon. It is ad
visable to provide enough feed
space to allow all hens to be at
the trough at the same time in
order that scratch feeds may be
fed on top of the mash. In feed
ing scratch feeds in this manner,
the hens are not encouraged to
take any more exercise than is
possible and, too, are not en
couraged to pick it up from the
ground which will encourage
picking up round worm eggs and
other disease conditions, which
are apt to be harmful to hens.
Enough scratch should be fed
to allow some to be left over for
the morning.
Even with the above mention
ed procedure of feeding laying
hens, they still can not consume
enough feed from fall until
spring to force maximum produc
tion. They will consume from
7 Yi to 8 pounds of feed per bird
each 30 days; not allowing any
thing for feed waste.
In order to encourage more
feed consumption there are other
things that can be done, such as
turning lights on the birds so as
to allow at least a 14 hour day.
All night lighting is very suc
cessful. The feed troughs and
water founts should be in plain
view and conveniently located to
each other. At midday, pellets
made from the laying mash can
be fed to encourage more feed
consumption.
If the company, who builds
the laying mash, does not build a
pellet feed, this can be accom
plished by dampening as much
laying mash as the birds will
consume in approximately 1U
minutes. If too much mash is
wet, the feed will grow stale
and ruin the hens.
