Joyce Andrew and her cousin, glaine Lanier, of Macon, visited their grandmother, Mrs, Hobbs, in Hawkinsville last week. Houston county friends of Mr. K. L. Baird of Macon, formerly of Grovania, will regret to learn of his illness. His daughter, Mrs. C. C. Pierce, was in Macon the latter part of last week to be with her father following an operation he underwent last Thursday. Betty McAnally of Decatur was the recent guest of Joyce An drew. Phyllis and Janice Hutchinson have returned to their home in Birmingham, Ala. after a two weeks’ visit with their aunt, Mrs, C. K. Cooper, and family. Mrs. C. D. Cooper and grand daughter, Martha Cooper, are visiting Mrs„ Cooper’s daughter, Mrs. J. W. Hutchinson, and family in Birmingham, A[a. Sam L. Norwood 111 is visiting his uncle and aunt, Mr. and Mrs. Carl Ponder, in Miami, Fla. Mr. and Mrs. W. C. Greene Mr. J. C. Greene and daughter. Barbara, and Vallette Jordan of Milledgeville spent Tuesday night and Wednesday last week with Mr. and Mrs. J. Y. Greene at the New Perry hotel. Mr.and Mrs. Sol Bernstein and children, Miss Evelyn Bernstein and Mr. Nathan Bernstein, have moved to Brooklyn, N. Y. to make their home, Mr. S. Bern stein was in the mercantile busi ness in Perry for 20 years. Dur ing their residence here, this family made many friends who wish them well in their new home. Mr. and Mrs. J. M. Gooden spent several days last week at Leslie, Ga. with relatives. Mrs. W. E. Marshall and sons, S2c Earl Marshall, U. S. Navy, and Tommy Marshall, spent Fri day in Araericus, Ga. with her mother, Mrs. T. L. Bell. Mr. aad Mrs. W. E. Beckham and sons, Billy and Ed, Mrs. Mildred E. Schnell and Mrs. W. B. Hodge are at Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla. this week. Mr. and Mrs. Lewis Harper are on a vacation trip to Florida. Mrs. John Taylor of Cochran is visiting her daughter, Mrs. A. P. Whipple. Mrs. A. L. Stanton is visiting her daughter, Mrs. H. F. Cogill, and Mr. Cogill in Atlanta. Mrs. Frank King spent several days last week in Vienna. Ga. with her mother, Mrs. K. R. Lewis, who received a mes sage last week that her son, En sign Kirby Lewis, was killed off' the coast of Okinawa in June when his ship was sunk by a Japanese suicide pilot, Mr. and Mrs. C. H. Pettus of Birmingham, Ala. were guests of her sister, Mrs. R. E. Smith, and family for the weekend. Mary Jane and Charles Pettus returned to Birmingham Sunday with their parents after a visit of ten days here. Mr, Melvin Nelson has return ed from a trip to Liberal Kansas. His sister, Mrs. Clarence Weider spahn, returned with him to be with their mother, Mrs. H. H. Nelson, while Sgt. Wiederspaugh is in the service. Anita Milam was given a pret ty party Saturday in celebration °f her sixth birthday by her mother, Mrs. Rhett Milam.Twen ty-five little friends enjoyed this party. Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Lott, who kla ’ recent * y ' n Birmingham, 1 | HOUSTON COUNTY TAX LEVY FOR YEAR 1945 * The Tax Receiver having filed his digest for the year 1945, the , Lourt proceeded to levy a county tax for the year 1945. 1 he aggregate value of the property of Houston County on the digest of 1945 is $3,799,533.00. It was thereupon ordered that a tax of twenty mills be levied upon all the taxable property of Houston County, on the digest,and not on the digest, for all the several county purposes for which the law authorizes and directs county authorities to levy taxes (not in cluding educational purposes) for the year 1945, said tax to be levied for and divided among the several county purposes as specified below, | The Alternative Road Law embraced in Sections 95-801 to 95- i 811, inclusive, of the Code of 1933, being operative in Houston j County: It was ordered that a tax of four-tenths of one per cent, or I four mills, be levied upon all the taxable property of Houston County, on the digest and not on the digest, for a road fund to be used tor working and maintaining the public roads of Houston County. It was further ordered that an additional tax of sixteen mills be levied upon all the taxable property of Houston County, on the digest and noton the digest, for all the other several county pur poses for which the law authorizes and directs county authorities to levy taxes; said tax of sixteen mills to be levied for and divided among the several county purposes as follows: Ist, To pay the legal indebtedness of the County due and to be come due and past due $4.00 per $l,OOO or 4.00 Mills 2nd. To build and repair courthous es and jails, bridges and fer ries, and other public improve ments $4.00 per $l,OOO or 4.00 Mills 3rd. To pay sheriffs, jailers, and other officers fees that may he legally entitled to out of the county $2.00 per $l,OOO or 2.00 Mills 4th. To pay coroners all fees that may be due them for holding inquests .05 per $l,OOO or .05 Mill s | - sth. To pay expenses of the coun ty for bailiffs at court, non resident witnesses in criminal cases, servant hire, stationery, fuel and the like $2.00 per $l,OOO or 2.00 Mills' 6th. To pay jurors a per diem compensation $2.00 per $l,OOO or 2.00 Mills 7th. To pay expenses incurred in supporting the poor of the county, and as otherwise prescribed by the Code $1.25 per $l,OOO or 1.25 Mills Bth.
